The car burglaries are so prevalent.
Mine got broken into last time I was in Houston too. Didn’t even have anything in the truck to take as I had brought everything into the hotel. About a dozen or so other trucks all broken into. Guessing they were looking for weapons left in consoles and glove boxes. Didn’t touch the cars or SUVs, only trucks

Happens all the time. Roving gangs. Purses usually. Broad daylight. Check out the felony lane gang info online about one of the gangs. Seen it happen in BR and Nola. Happens all over.

My break in happened at Kirby and westheimer
HPD said it is Asian gangs in that area

They use a long flat head screw driver on the back window
Breaks the glass in, they reach in and grab and it doesn’t set off the alarm
They had to reach in and cut the cable on my bag

Schlumberger policy is you take your laptop inside with you, I got written up

Well to update on things. This group cleans out a creek in their neighborhood every now and then. Just so happens the thieves dumped all the bags there. Luckily I had a box of business cards in my bag and they called me. At the glass shop now repacing the glass for $118 then heading over to retrieve my bag.

I leave my work laptop in my truck fairly often. I always figured that I have tinted black windows, a black bag and black floormats and you really can't see it. Maybe I should reconsider.

It appears these fricktards from the felony lane gang, apparently based out of the Gardere area target trucks looking for guns and information for stealing a persons identity. So by chance, they may come across your truck looking for a gun since they operate all over BR.

my O&G employer has a similar policy. Like you better not allow your computer to be stolen from a vehicle or else. Thankfully haven't had it happen.

I carry one occasionally but don't leave it in my truck overnight. I don't leave my laptop overnight either but I stop on the way home from work with it in there fairly often.

I won't get in any shite if mine gets stolen though. It's encrypted and I'll just order another one the next day.

Laptops are the #1 most sought after and stolen items bro.

I don't get why, either. My password is a multi-character, numeral and symbol sequence that you'd have to have a machine to crack, but it would lock up and require an IT master key to get to open after so many attempts.

Are there real-deal IT techs in the hood reformatting disks? Even if they did, a verified copy of an operating system would make the thing so expensive that they'd be just as well to get a refurb off Amazon and not be trading in felony-level stolen goods.

Is there that big of a secondary spare parts market?

They probably sell them for $100-200 to someone that knows how to make them usable again.

So I picked up my bag and everyone else bag that got hit last night. Apparently the thieves rummaged thru the bags, jacked the laptops and tossed them into a creek at the end of Billy St. The people that clean out the creek put them all in trash bags and asked if I could take them all. Looks like they (thieves) went thru everyone's bags shuffled thru someone's wallet left all the credit cards.

I had a envolope with a check already deposited thru my phone app sitting in my bag. Couldnt tell unless you open the envolope, they left that untouched.

Basically they were looking for cash and electronics.

Eta: going to follow up with our friend to confirm his bag is with us and taking the rest to the police station.

My work laptop is fingerprint encrypted, and cannot be accessed without VPN outside of my workplace IP. What these low IQ thief’s don’t realize is that the hardware is completely useless at the pawn shop or their local EZ cash store

This is why you at least get them out of plain sight. Under a seat, in a trunk, whatever.

They've obviously found some kind of market for them. I think most of the door handle pullers in BR are looking for guns though. I see it on Nextdoor at least every few weeks. Had a gun stolen out of my truck and it's been reported to the police.
