my neighbors had a disaster crew from Michigan doing cleaning work yesterday
was talking to their crew leader. He said he's never been to a disaster site where the residents had done so much of the work already. They said they usually have to come in and do all the sheet rock and insulation removal, he was blown away and what the people have done

Truly amazing how hard and fast people will work when they have to foot the bill.

I would guess that they are used to dealing with the Yankee "men" that have no idea how to do much of anything around the house and/or are lazy.

FIL gave me a similar story yesterday
Insurance adjuster that he met from Florida said he had never seen a community come together like he has seen in BR and surrounding areas.

Nice stereotype, bro.

Why thank you.
Do you have any other suggestions for why they might have been surprised at the ambitious behavior of the fine folks in BR?

Yankees are all union types. They sit back and wait for the sheetrock guy to take down the sheetrock. Then they wait on the elctrician guy to unplug the lamps, TVs. Then they wait on the carpet guy to take out the carpet.
Down here, we just take matters in our own hands and get to ripping stuff out.

Maybe they are just being complimentary to people who have just suffered a disaster? To say men in other places are girlie is just . Come on man.

Exactly right.
Except for the fact that there are self-motivated types, lazy types, union types, hard-working types, and looking-for-handout types in every city of every state of this country.
But yeah, you're pretty much dead on.

well, the yankee friends I have are not, let's just say, the do it yourself types. Maybe I'm way off base here.
Posted on 8/21/16 at 9:19 am to LSUMJ
Unfortunately, I think that is due to familiarity with flooding and what has been done in the past to clean up this kind of thing.

Having lived in small town Ohio for 4 years back in the 80's I would say yeah, you're way off base. Those people, mostly of German descent in that area, put other folks to shame.

I should have added that, yeah, our area has been wonderful. Neighbors, friends, strangers, churches...all awesome.

I am sure those same Yankees were fipping out the bad stuff after Sandy.

Perhaps. Not as good as the BR folks according to the disaster team mentioned though.
Fipping sounds like a synthetic drug habit.

Lol, it was all the same.
People with, or without insurance, did their own work.

The Amish/Mennonite people in MS are a group that will get some shite done after a disaster. I have seen them in MS after tornadoes. They will have the roofs repaired and new shingles installed before most people can find a place to buy a tarp for their roof.
I don't know how they get in touch to summon all the help. Must be some secret smoke signal magic but horses and buggies will roll

Well most of the homes that were damaged were working class families. Not the projects like New Orleans after Katrina. Maybe that had something to do with it....just saying.
