I don't agree with the methods but that is a terrible analogy.
It's not actual history. They aren't asking to destroy the civil war battle grounds or artifacts, just statues erected decades later.

While it is shameful that this was done, I think it is even worse that the law enforcement personnel allowed this to happen. Having said that, Durham and Chapel Hill are so far left it would embarrass Karl Marx.
