Totally forgot one detail. When my fiancee went visit her sister in the hospital to see the baby, she told her that she didn't want me there because she didn't feel comfortable around me. Obviously this is before the whole hand shaking incident and I have no idea what I did to make her feel uncomfortable. I guess it stemmed from the initial ribbing. It's funny, she talks crap about people all the time, but when somebody does it to her, she can't handle it. I can understand not wanting a barrage of people in the hospital room, but come on. That was why I distanced myself from her when we went visit.

Also, I didn't sit in the living room the whole time. I did interact with the baby and sister-in-law to be, but left the room when she needed to breastfeed.

I see my in laws roughly every week or every other week. We never shake hands. My MiL hugs me goodbye every time though.

You're overthinking a greeting, man. I see a lot of my friends weekly or more and we always do a handshake/fist bump/bro hug, something to initiate the meeting together. I kiss my wife when I get home. It's only awkward if you analyze it to death.

If you want to really get analytical, where is the cutoff for any sort of greeting? When do you see someone with enough frequency that you just walk into their house and say nothing?

You give her a pass on this because women have crazy things going on during and after delivering a baby, and only want close family, mostly females in there. I wouldn't read much into it honestly.

Based on the OP and this last post, it sounds like you are rude. Apologize and stop being hiding behind this "I'm just being me" BS. You insulted the sister and, for goodness sake, shake a man's hand when you go to his home.

Tell the sister-in-law to piss up a rope.

You should have shook the man's hand but that's petty to get bent out of shape over.

If you're as socially awkward as you claim to be, ribbing on people probably isn't in your best interest

Am I reading this right? You met the sister and started making fun of her? And you cant figure out why she thinks your a dick? Your calling her a bully when you did it to her first?

A little ribbing between friends is normal, but cracking on someone you dont really know isnt.

After giving the initial impression of being a dick, you haven't done anything to change that first impression. In fact you have reinforced thier opinion of you by being awkward, silent, and unfriendly.

I wouldnt want a dick coming around during the happy occasions of life like the birth of a child.

Since your marrying her sister, just make an effort to be a nicer to her and quit blaming your actions on a condition.

I dealt with a potential sister-in-law to be hating me because we are both introverted. That relationship ended with the quickness. GL baw

When I read this, I imagined you as above average height and very overweight for some reason. Also you had a goatee.

Edit: I have an in-law that I'm not close to. I compare it to that person at work you can't stand but put up with their lameness, smile and move on. just do that with them .

How did you get a partner? It seems like you're socially awkward as frick.

It took me almost two years to get comfortable enough to make some jokes or even just be myself around her. I didn't start making fun of her right of the bat. However, I should have been more mindful of her feelings after I heard that she didn't like me because of the ribbing.

so what exactly did you do/say?

I ask, because I've been married now for 22 years, and to this day, while I'm comfortable around my wife's family, they absolutely do not have my sense of humor, so ribbing on them would not be fun for me OR them. And I know that, so I don't bother.

But I'm curious as to what you said, and maybe a little why you may not have been able to tell that this chick may simply not have been the right person to joke with like that.

Yep same way. Had to learn to act like I give a shite about people. It sucks tbh. Only advice is to learn to talk to people and to "interact" with them. Itll be exhausting as hell but in the long run itll be better for your wife. Keep the peace kinda bullshite.
