Been reading a lot about how we got to this point as a nation. Found this article interesting/informative on how the Prison-Industrial Complex came to be and it’s relationship to the War-on-Drugs.

It’s a goddamn racket is what it is. I remember working out in liberal-arse California a few years before weed was fully legalized. They were still incarcerating folks on possession just because they didn’t have the foresight to pay a doctor $200 for a RX. Talked to a PD for awhile, and she said it was just a money grab, pure and simple.

It is ridiculous and immoral. This is worth protesting.
Bad capitalism as well.
I just can't see how anyone ever thought for profit prisons was a good idea. They lobby for stricter laws or not repealing stupid drug laws, protecting their profit at the expense of the citizen. Corrupt!

The fact that most places are cite and release although it’s still illegal pretty much proves this.
It’s illegal but treated like a speeding ticket. You just pay your way out of it.
Fully legalize or decriminalize it, and the easy revenue from writing a ticket goes away.

I’m pretty sure the stat still stands but something like 60-70% of incarcerations are drug related.
Decriminalization alone would free up a ton of space in facilities. But then legislators would come up with some more bullshite laws to fill them all back up again.

Because many on the right think the answer to every single government problem, and half the things that aren't government problems, is "privatization".
And it's not just the for-profit prisons, plenty of parish and county sheriffs are on this gravy train as well.

I was told privatization of the natural gas industry would result in much cheaper prices.
I think its called crony capitalism or some ish like that. No free market for sure (about the natural gas).
The state has no business farming out its prisons.

The war on drugs had and has nothing to do with ending drug use.
It now funds and empowers no shortage of small govt minded law and order politicians however.

Louisiana is built on private prisons. The day we do away with them will be a huge turning point in this state. With that being said, we’ll be the last state holding on to them.

If you have 70% less people getting arrested, having trials, prisons, half way houses, court ordered rehab... And suddenly that whole industry of lawyers, judges, clerks,police, prisons, guards, govt workers are unemployed- yeah they might try to fight you on that.

A lot of parish sheriffs lease out cells of their jails and prisons to for-profit prison management companies.

While some do rent out space to private prisons, I was referring more to the fact that the over-incarceration in the state helps keep the local jails filled, which keeps the local sheriffs very happy. They love housing state DOJ criminals and getting that per diem.
