Of course he can but why? Pass being King of England? His name in history not to mention being the mother fricking King? Not worth it but he’s old so who knows.

I don’t see Charles just bowing out (even if it were possible) and handing the Crown to William. His whole life has been invested in preparing to be king. I also don’t think William would be keen on Camilla being coronated as Queen Consort. Charles supposedly said before their marriage that she would remain Duchess of Cornwall after he ascends the throne, but he is flaky to say the least. There is also the matter that Camilla is divorced with a living husband. And while the Church of England may have relaxed their rules allowing divorced people to remarry in the Church, I am not sure that extends to a divorced person being coronated Queen Consort.
It’s possible that Charles reigns for several years and then abdicates, allowing William to ascend the throne. There is recent precedent for that scenario in The Netherlands and Denmark.
There are also whispers that the Queen may choose to gradually retire from public life (she turns 95 this month) and that Charles would assume the role of Prince Regent, assuming the official duties of the Sovereign.

Most likely scenario for sure. QEII will pass away, and Charles will nominally take over until his oppressively weak persona dissolves into a puddle and then he’ll step aside for health reasons to give the monarchy a fresh young(ish) face. Will be interesting to see if Charles keeps ‘Charles’ as his regnal name given the history.

George VI was the Queen’s father but at any rate I think William will reign as the fifth king of that name, as he likely (or his heirs) will be on the throne in 2066, the thousand-year anniversary of the Norman Conquest.
ETA I think Wills will reign as William V.

Correct on the spelling. The bottom line is that she will have the title of Queen and the Her Majesty to go along with it.
I wonder how long Charles will reign. Camilla would be Queen Consort, although I believe there was some talk of giving her the title of Princess Consort instead, but that was years ago. I imagine she will take the title of Queen. There will be those who won’t be happy, but I imagine that most Brits have moved on.

I agree that a lot of the British subjects likely wouldn’t object much, but there might be one very important Brit who would object, namely William. That’s just a guess on my part.
Though season 4 of The Crown stirred up a lot of resentment against Charles and Camilla, over-dramatized or not. I know Diana wasn’t perfect but good lord Charles was portrayed in a bad light. Lots of people can’t see past the soap opera drama.

I don’t think Charles will abdicate. The abdication of Edward VIII in 1936 is still a very sore subject for the monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II has stated time and time again that the duty of monarch is one you have until death. I believe Charles thinks this as well. The only thing that would compel him to abdicate is if the fate of the monarchy itself rested on it.
