I was told top end vehicles, regardless of age, need premium supreme gas. In this case should I start using it or save money with standard gas?

Edit: I drive a 06 H3 Hummer

I'm clueless with this subject, but I would think giving the board you vehicle would help with your question.

Do what the manufacturer recommends. Turbos love premium.

I tried this once in my Q-45.
No issues.
Kept doing.
Wouldn't start one morning.

Towed to infinity dealer. Almost $500 Bucks later, I was officially told I was a dumbass for doing that shite.

Higher end vehicles typically run a higher engine compression ratio and require the extra octane in premium fuel to prevent engine "knock."

Most vehicles don't need premium gas. Back in the day premium may have had more cleaning agents, but not today.

Edmunds made a list of vehicles that require premium gas.

Edmunds premium gas required

An H3 isn't a Hummer, it's a wannabe.

I've always ran 93 octane Shell in my F150.

If the vehicle is calibrated to run on premium-grade fuel then use it. Vehicles these days can adjust timing to get by lower octane than what is intended without risk of damage but you will save nothing. Premium grade gasolines among major brands generally have higher levels of detergent additives than lower octane fuel too.

It's solely dependent on what the engine was tuned to run on. In general, turbo and high compression engines use premium and most others have no benefit from it. Premium gas isn't better, it just detonates at a higher temperature.

What does the manual say? Quick Google says 87 octane is recommended, so running anything higher is just a waste of money

Would you put high octane gas in a 2006 Chevy Colorado? The ones with the in line 5 cylinder engine? No??? That's the same engine that you have In your hummer.

I had a 1992 Corvette that ran fine on 87 octane, and a 2003 Silverado that had valve rattle on 87 octane. Really depends on the car. I think Hummers had a high compression ratio so probably 93 in the summer and if youre lucky 89 or 87 in the cooler months.

This is the same as claiming Arkansas is a top end state.
