They need to stop that.

the fabric of spacetime
what does that even mean? is it a term of art, like an actual scientific term? or a meaningless term that clickbaity popular science articles use? and if it's a real term, what does it mean to burn a hole in it?

What are you using as the criteria for one of these planets you reference? We have exoplanets fairly close to us, Proxima Centauri b is about 4ly away.

Turns out it's made of black canvas

Only one way to find out

the laser could tear into “the very fabric of space and time.”
Assuming, of course, that they know what the fabric of space and time is made of.

I don't know, I feel like poking a hole in the fabric of spacetime kicks the destruction up a couple notches.

Why a "fabric", or why "spacetime", or why the term as a whole?
I'm sure you've heard time referred to as the 4th dimension, after the 3 spatial dimensions. Turns out the universe behaves as if time is just another direction. So that's why it's called "spacetime".
And "fabric", well, do you have a more fitting term?
It's hard to wrap your mind around, but there is a difference between empty space and absolutely nothing at all. We conceptualize empty space as a fabric because something could possibly fill the space. There actually is space. Time exists there. In the absence of that fabric of spacetime itself, nothing can exist there, not even time. There isn't even a there there.
So that's what a hole would be like. It doesn't make sense.

They will blast a hole in Uranus.

They'd better watch out, mine blasts back!

Theoretical physics is off the rails these days

Not if this guy has anything to say about it.

I equate this stuff to writing yourself a check for $1 billion and expecting it to magically appear in your checking account.
You can do all the math and planning you want, but it ain't real until it's real.
Kind of like that ocean trash contraption. They did all the math and planning and it doesn't work. Maybe it will one day, but the tearing into “the very fabric of space and time” is many times more complex. And then for it to be useful? That's a whole other thing.
These science fricks just want funding so they can be set for life in a job that has no end.
And how do you tear space? And how do you tear time? If anything, they would have to do the opposite and tap into counterspace.

Those French certainly have active imaginations. There was a time the Hadron collider was going to create a black hole and collapse the earth so I’m not TOO worried about this.

When "they" say that lasers "may be able to burn a hole" that means that they are already doing it.
Posted on 9/18/19 at 5:05 pm to Korkstand
Thank you for that explanation!! Learned something today

So it's a laser with the power of the sun? So why isnt the sun putting holes in space time?
