It is a nice place to visit. Everyone over there is literally trading years of their life for $. One thing if you work for a US based company is that you work you arse to the bone working a Dubai work day and they US home office starts up at 5pm Dubai time. I nearly went over there a few years back but it didn't go through, and I'm thankful that it did not in hindsight. I've visited 4 times there for about 10 days each time, and each time the novelty has worn off a little more. It is an Arabian peninsula version of Vegas but much more opulent.

That is definitely not the only country that does that.

Source? Or are you just making stuff up? Please cite examples of actual beheadings in Dubai, for instance.

Capital punishment throughout much of the Arab world is by hanging, not beheading. Except for Saudi Arabia.

In Dubai it's actually by firing squad.

quote:

Under Emirati law, multiple crimes carry the death penalty, and the sole method of execution is firing squad. Current law allows the death penalty for treason, murder, rape, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, and drug trafficking, although death sentences are frequently commuted to life sentences. Overseas nationals and UAE nationals have both been executed for crimes.

Notice that paying for prositutes isn't in the list.

My dad worked over there for over a decade, maybe two, only reason he left is because ConocoPhillips left the area. He absolutely loved it and moved my mom over there full time once my sister went off to college.

You can party with Russians, Eurotrash, and Americans. There is a lot to do out there. They didn't suffer much of any horror stories because they lived in a western segregated neighborhood and he was pretty high up the food chain in CP.

If I was alone, I would love to spend a few years in different places raking in some money. Would have to be for a good company and position I enjoyed though.

Ok, I was thinking more executions at large than beheadings specifically. But tons of countries in that part will kill you for adultery, homosexuality, apostasy, and for being raped. Honor killings are also pretty common, with beheading being the most common way of honor killing.

Basically what you need to do is enjoy the sights/foods of ME while you're there, and take really expensive vacations to Europe and SE Asia for all of your sexual exploits (that's what that extra pay is for).

But while you're over there keep you snake in its cage. They tend to take things like extramarital sex seriously there.

You're still wildly overstating the case. Do these things happen? Yes they do, but not as widely or as commonly as you think. Look up specific sources, not unsupported rumors.

For example, your inclusion of honor killings is pretty strange given that this doesn't happen to Westerners. When it does happen, it's always to a local. So that isn't anything to worry about for the OP.

The US military still allows GIs to go there on trips and off time, so I have a hard time believing it's that easy to get into trouble. I realize the US military can pull strings and would easily protect some guys, but at the same time they tend to strictly forbid places that are easy to get into trouble.

So while the threat of screwing up bad is there, you'd have to be pretty reckless for it to actually happen to you.

Five years? Vacation time? This is important.

Five years in Dubai without significant recharge potential would kill your soul.

Ok, are we talking about how they treat each other or how they treat Westerners? Yes it's rare for a government over there to imprison and especially kill an American, because that's some serious shite that the Ambassador, the Secretary of State, and the President himself get involved in.

As for how they treat each other, it's fricking awful and under reported. Yes the media flips out whenever ISIS kills people for mundane horrific reasons, but Saudi Arabia and Iran do it every day as well.

If you want to know how the Muslim world actually thinks, I've got some nice stats for you from a Pew poll that came out 2 weeks ago: LINK

A friend of mines brother lived and worked there for 12 years. He was single and loved it. Made a shite ton of money, moved back, bought a house cash.

Our son is in Qatar....he works, studies, sleeps. About two years now. Has been to Dubai for work and seemed comfortable while there. He is not one to party terribly much. More of a camping, fishing type.

He, wife and daughter vacation in Europe. They live State-side.

It's a hellhole. I wouldn't do it unless the money was truly exceptional. And even then, negotiate it down to 3 years or less.

Is it 100% a 5 year stint? As said, I mean why not go and try and transfer out after 2-3 years? Few things even in business are 100% guaranteed unless you put 0 effort into keeping it that way.

Laws are crazy there! Do your research and understand what 5 years will feel like. May feel like 20. Family member travelled extensively in that area for business and he would not move there.
