ive come full circle on this. i was drug kicking and screaming from my 1980s & 1990s vehicles to brand new ones. i have a little 1980s bmw around for shits & giggles and getting out of that and into a 2018 vehicle with 173 airbargs, assisted braking, steel frame designed to minimize cabin ingress and 100 other bells and whistles its unquestionably lightyears safer than that bmw deathtrap. in fact i'm probably going to sell it because i can't in good conscience put that thing on a busy road with my kids in the back.

i watch 'comedians with cars' and hell, even multi-millionaire seinfeld can't keep those older things running without a mechanic following him around.

even seen a few episodes where the car breaks down and he laughs about it while they're working on it but..damn. fun for collecting but you're just stupid if you get out on the road in 2021 in one of those ancient vehicles from the last century.

Im with you on the appliances, and would throw in ovens/ranges and dishwashers as well.

Disagree on the LED light bulbs. Its one of few products these days that is getting better while going down in cost. Granted, it was astronomically high to begin with, but they are a much better value than incandescent at this point.

Ten years ago, a room with six overhead recessed cans with incandescent bulbs would be heating the room enough to be noticeable while burning 360 watts. Today, an LED integrated trim has come down from $25 to $8, lasts longer (nothing approaching what its claimed though), burns 42-60 watts, and is barely noticeable to the touch.

he American Family. 100+ years ago, it consisted of the full family group - not just a nuclear family that was expected to hack it on their own. We just decided in the 40s/50s that the nuclear family was the new ideal, but it was untested and has been a disaster. We've so lost perspective on this that we know bemoan the loss of whatever we supposed had in the 50s, when, in fact, that period of time was the exception to basically all of human history

People in general haven’t been able to say no to material prosperity, even if it ultimately means they and everyone they love is some level of miserable.

It feels to me that we are trending towards a time when material prosperity will be out of reach for more people.

What will happen then? It’s not like we can magically go back to the big extended families and communities taking care of each other.

All of the social forces now seem to be pushing towards more and more isolation.
I think a lot of the compliance we saw with COVID was a result of people just not being able to distrust the government, because the government is all they have to take care of them when they get old.

while true, grab the LED bulb by the base and there's your heat. its got to transform that electricity somehow and its usually got some fancy doodad in there that eventually dies.

i find it ironic that almost every single BRAND new home is loaded with open fixtures filled with LED bulbs that look...exactly like that edison bulb.

And have Ozzy sing that.

Water heaters. Ours finally gave out due to the natural gas burner wearing out.
I did some research and had it replace with a Rheem that has like an inch of insulation and it cut my natural gas bill in half.
And the original one was a Rheem ! But it had like a 1/4 inch of horse hair for insulation.
Don't buy one of those cheap water heaters from Lowe's or Home Depot.

Imagine this modern rabble being happy with soup? They’ll be demanding boiled seafood.

As a youngster I don’t recall but a few lightbulbs having to be replaced in the old homestead.
My dad kept his old running Frigidaire on the back porch as a spare with stuff in it. It was still there in 2012 when he passed.
Kenmore washer and dryers seems to last forever as well. Whirlpool makes then so that’s that.

I don't disagree. Quarantines would have been a lot less rough on a lot of folks if they had had a big extended family to be with under one roof. Instead, it was almost exactly the opposite.

You forgot executive pay and profits. Those are much, much higher than they were back then. Especially executive pay compared to a good worker salary. Huge difference between then and now.
