Can you get a Grand National for under $10,000? If so one of them, a late 70s Bronco and a Square Body Chevy.

I owned a 1981 RX7 that looked just like that. It was a pretty car, but slow. I remember pulling up next to a Mustang on the interstate and trying to race him. I floored it to let him know my intentions. He sped up next to me and then started driving the same speed. I could see him out of the corner of my eye looking over at me, waiting to start the race. Since I still had the accelerator pushed all the way to the floor, I knew it wasn't going to be much of a race. Embarrassed, I started acting like I was changing radio stations and that I didn't notice him.

They were English, so no big surprise there. I credit learning most of my mechanical skills from owning both a Spitfire and TR6. I can drive all over the southeast and point out to my kids different places I was stranded in my Triumphs. Still love the cars though. You just have to keep a tool box handy. My Spitfire was my college car, so the learning opportunities weren't very appreciated. I bought the TR6 after I graduated. Whenever I would get compliments on the TR6 I would tell people, "I love the Sunday afternoon drives, I just hate the long walks home".

240Zs were fast.

I'm working from 30 year old memory, but they had low body weight and a straight 6 with fuel injection.

I drove one and just a twitch on the gas made the car jump forward, and that was at highway speed.

Easiest car to work on and maintain ever for the amateur hobbyist.

Best BMW ever made and you can pick one up (non m3) for well under 10k

Honorable mention

Eta I'm biased, I own both of these cars (not the ones in the photo)

TR6 is amuch better car than a TR7.

Probably so compared to other cars of the day. Zero to 60 was 8.3 seconds for the 240Z's, which is pretty slow by today's standards. Of course all the cars we remember as being fast are slow compared to modern cars. I currently own a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo and a 1980 Porsche 911 and both are great to drive, but even when new they were 0 to 60 in the 6 to 7 second range. They are both extremely quick accelerating from 60 mph to 100 mph.

If you bought it before the prices spiked you're sitting on a gold mine.

I paid $17K for it. It still has less than 100K miles. I bought it about 6 years ago. I believe the mileage because the serial numbers on the tires that were on it when I bought it indicated they were manufactured in 1990. The salesmen at both places I took it for tire quotes were shocked when they saw how old the tires on it were. They both showed me how to interpret the serial numbers to confirm the manufactured year.

My brother had a 944 turbo in 80's. It was cool, but slow. My friend beat him in a race with his Jetta. Way faster Porsches back then.

yeah I'm calling TOTAL bullshite on that. Try that Jetta at a 45 mph roll and see the 951 suck the headlights out of it. Now try to turn that Jetta on a track and see just how much different the two cars are. It's not remotely close.

BTW, Porsche 951 (944 Turbo) nor 930 (911 Turbo) were nearly the fastest mid-80's Porsche. The Gouppe B 959 was absolutely faster than both and even by today's standards has huge get-up-and-go. Production started in 86.

240Z-280ZX were fun cars but you could actually hear them rust.

Let me explain better. They would race down the block to about 50 mph.. The 944 was slow to spool up the turbo. They were just straight shot runs and the Jetta would win by a car length. Trust me, I wanted my brother to win and I was pissed, but he didn't. I'm not talking track handling or 1/4 mile.

You are correct. I read that about the 944 Turbo once and obviously liked what I read since I own one, even though a fact check shows it incorrect. The 930 and I'm sure some of the other more expensive ones were faster. The 944 Turbo would do 0 to 60 in 5.9 seconds and top out at 152 mph.

Car and Driver listed 6.8 sec zero to 60mph and 15.2 quarter mile. The 944S turbo was the faster of the two at 5.9 seconds. OP said 944 turbo, not 944S turbo.

Anyways, sorry to derail this thread. I love most of the cars and trucks posted.

I used the 944 Turbo performance numbers stated in this article -

LINK

quote:

Porsche 944 Turbo manages to cover the 0-60 mph sprint in 5.9 seconds and the standing-start quarter mile in 14.8 seconds. The Porsche 944 Turbo is claimed to achieve a top speed of 245 km/h or 152 mph,

Mine is in pretty good condition and looks pretty similar to the photo I posted. Mine doesn't have the decal though. I bought it about 5 years ago and paid $5500 for it. Like the 911 I own, most of the older Porsche's have greatly increased in value over the last 5 years.

The 959 was a supercar that wasn't mass produced.

I am currently searching for a 928S to fart around with. The prices for just about any model with the crest are climbing big time.
