Americans’ drinking habits – what they drink and how much – are about the same as they were pre-pandemic, according to new research conducted by Echelon Insights on behalf of the Beer Institute. Overall, the survey found that a majority of those polled reported drinking about the same amount of beer, and with approximately the same frequency, since the pandemic began. This is in stark contrast to the widely held assumption that people are drinking more during the pandemic.

"Many people think that over the course of the pandemic, people have been sitting at home drinking more beer than ever before, and that’s simply not the case,” said Jim McGreevy, President and CEO of the Beer Institute. “Although many news reports erroneously stated that beer consumption has increased during quarantine, the perception that people are drinking more is false. The survey results match the dramatic decline we’ve seen in retail beer sales, especially since many gathering places where draft beer is served, such as stadiums, concert venues, bars, and restaurants, had to close or were limited in their operational capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

When asked about overall alcohol consumption habits – defined as the consumption of wine, beer, and liquor or hard spirits – survey respondents reported that their drinking habits have not changed greatly since the pandemic started. While 1 in 5 respondents reported drinking more, nearly the same amount also reported drinking less. Nearly 60 percent of respondents reported no change in their drinking habits since the pandemic began. These results are in line with other public polling from 2020 that showed most Americans reported drinking about the same during quarantine, including IUPUI, Morning Consult and YouGov.

Did you drink more, less, or about the same?

This is true for me. My liquor consumption went way up there for a while, though.

About the same, maybe slightly less because I didn't go to breweries at all. Used to hit the breweries once every week or two.

Liquor is more efficient and less fattening.

Plus the seltzer market has exploded.

Sheeeit. I was half tempted to buy stock in Tito’s based off how many bottles we consumed last spring

Yeah, liquor and wine.

I get sick of beer pretty quickly.

I started out drinking way more during the pandemic - so much that I’m now drinking way less than I was pre-pandemic.

I probably drank more during the week due to the flexibility of working out at home. Now that gyms are back open, I reverted back to drinking little to none during the week.

It probably balances out depending on a person's drinking tendencies and habits. It's not actually a typical thing for most people to sit at home and drink alone and probably even less with just family members around. I tend to drink mostly in social situations, which obviously happened less frequently over the past year and a half.

When Kentucky was evaluating what taxes had dropped during COVID-19, one of the only ones that didn’t was our alcohol tax. It actually produced higher revenue than usual.

That was me. Those first couple of months working at home everyday, I'd wrap up work by 2 or 3 everyday. Then boredom would set in a lot of days and I'd start popping beers. I curtailed that by summer though.

I didn't drink at all when everything was closed and there was nowhere to go.

Drinking alone at home is for losers

Beer was about the same for me. More drinking at home when usually at bars, tailgating, etc.

Absolutely drank more liquor! Tried new bourbons, etc.

Self-reported alcohol consumption isnprobably the least reliable data point there is.

You got a wife and kids?

Because that scotch, in a nice crystal scotch glass, in my lounge chair, watching whatever the frick I want to watch on TV after everyone goes to sleep in my house is vital for my sanity and happiness.

The other 22 hours of the day I live for others. Those 2 hours are mine.
