Politics and the transformation of religion of politics

Is it just me, or has there recently been a major shift (even more so) to this religious like obsession with politics?
The Rights odd obsession with Trump, and The Lefts odd obsession with Obama.
To The Right (not all of them) wishing for death of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and The Left (not all of them) wishing for death on Trump and Borris Johnson?
It just seems cultish now. Maybe because I’m only 30 and haven’t really experienced politics of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. It’s kind of sad to watch this happen from an outside perspective. I lean right on some things, but politics have turned into a All In, All Out kind of deal. There’s no middle ground to these people.

The right is just happy to not have somebody bend over and get fricked at every turn like it typically does.

Maybe it was like this before and I'm not old enough to remember(40) but it seems like it started with George W Bush to me. That's the first time I personally could recall people being nasty and saying "not my president" and shite like that. Got worse with Obama. Given how far to one side Obama was, I knew the country would swing radically different from him. Trump wasn't expected though! Just glad we aren't going full on retard this time around electing a socialist. Just not American there.

It's weird. There are certain groups that I literally cannot say anything positive about Trump in front of, yet would shite a brick if I every said anything negative about Obama. It's sad and pathetic to intertwine yourself so much with politics.

There is a very tribal streak in many people. They pick a side and defend it with a cult-like determination. When there is a strong personality involved, a bit of the cult of personality is added.

Not sure I’m going thaaaat far on his policies but they aren’t as far right as portrayed. And as a person he’s probably closely to that say 30 years ago than today.

It seemed to me to really start with Clinton (at least in my lifetime). I remember all the "Don't blame me I voted for Bush" bumper stickers on cars. It seems like it got further spread with George W Bush, and has gotten worse ever since. I think we've always had this to an extent, but the internet has made it worse than it was before.

I feel the same about all the people with Obama gear. To me the Trump and Obama crazies are one in the same and it will happen with whoever is in the house next. People tie their political identity with their personality and its...just sad.
