Spruce is the closest housing to the President’s streets. I’d tell the younger one to live in Herget. It’s more centrally located and not on the outskirts near the bad part of town.

He saw a 15 year old kid get gunned down outside of Freds.
When did this happen? I don’t remember seeing this story. Can you link the article?

He had a close friend gang-raped and left for dead on the road.
Very sad situation. I would advise your son to be aware of the people he hangs out with so he doesn’t get gang raped by some high school kids.

Had another acquaintance through a professional club get shot up near Red Stick Social
Yeah if you want a major city that doesn’t have any crime in the downtown area I’m not sure anyone can help you out. I personally never went out in that area unless it was for a fraternity event, in which I was surrounded by a large group of friends and totally fine.
I’m not saying bad things don’t happen in Baton Rouge, but to act like all of those things are things that the majority of students at LSU experience regularly is foolish. Unless that student is constantly hanging around the wrong groups of people.

I watched that story play out so many times. Most end up “fine” as in they end up back home at the commuter school, get some bullshite degree, and some bullshite job.
I feel like a bullshite degree and bullshite job is the majority of America. Nothing wrong with it.

I wouldn’t pay out of state tuition at a run-of-the-mill SEC/Big 12 school. Some will give you in-state rates though if you meet certain academic standards.

What options am I missing?
Start at Blinn or another JC, and transfer into wherever. It's much easier to get in as a transfer when so many kids have "taken a break" after getting put on probation, etc. Even if God forbid he still wants to go to LSU, he'll be more prepared to deal with distractions and won't be hit in the face with course expectations (ie, nobody gives a frick if you get all Ds because you forget to show up at class, etc.)
The fact that you're seriously thinking about paying out of state tuition for a borderline student, that is likely going to struggle once the gloves are off and he's away from home is astounding.

Plus I believe the 4 year (away from home) college experience is a great way to learn some autonomy and make some connections, without being thrown into the sharks. And its a fantastic, fun experience that I look back on with great memories. If I can afford to do so, why not?
Well, I can vouch for Ole Miss being a great choice.
There are a ton of Texans that go there and it has that real college town feel. Out of state tuition does kind of suck and without any scholarships, you will look at a 4 year degree costing around $200,000. Most state schools will cost around the same if paying out of state. Texas Tech would be $120,000 for a 4 year degree, since in-state for you.

The majority of America doesn’t have wealthy parents that pay god knows what for their kids to go to an out of state college with no scholarships to dick off for a year or two then go home.

Start at Blinn
Blinn is not a bad option, especially if he is a Texas A&M fan in the slightest way.
Staying instate will save money
Here is nice link to all the options in Texas

Any money saved from not paying OOS can be invested for him later life to collect. In a scenario where you save the $80,000 going in-state, and invest that until a retirement age
You could leave him with a $3 - $7 million nest egg when he turns 62.

quote:Baton Rouge crime will never be at an acceptable level. But acting like campus is full of gang bangers is silly. Many many universities have what you would call a crime issue due to their location in a large city.
You can not possibly be trying to convince me that crime around campus is of an acceptable level.
quote:So why are you asking us? Send him back out Midwest where you went. Or if you want him to stay in the south send him to a college in the middle of nowhere.
I went to a large university (also 40k students) in the midwest. Craziest thing to happen is if someone passed out in a cornfield and might have to walk home the next day missing a shoe.
Regardless, that ACT score is rough and will hurt his chances at most out of state schools.

SJ, St. Thomas, or St. Pius?
Mine is a Junior at SJ and we are going through the same thing, although he has great grades and decent test scores for his first run-throughs of ACT and SAT. Both parents are LSU alums, and we are very hesitant about considering LSU even though he wants to and we want him to.
As of right now, he is considering LSU, aTm, UT, Arkansas, UF, and maybe UNC. He is like your's though and has no clue what he wants to do. That list could change 20 times between now and whenever.

I've heard outstanding things about Arkansas, including the fact they reciprocate with neighboring states for in-state tuition. I've also heard good things about Miss State.
My oldest is 13. For the past few years, I'd just casually tell him any school is on the table as long as it's out of LA. I have been a little bit more bullish on it lately, with the republican wins at BR Mayor as well as St George forming, but I think I'd still advise him to GTFO of here. However - if he chooses LSU, I will not overly dissuade him like I previously would have.
Both myself and my wife are LSU alums. My brother and sister-in-law are LSU alumni as well. Today we all hang our hats in Baton Rouge and if there's one regret, I wish I'd have gotten out there a little more. In fairness, it all turned out pretty great but just saying...

I don’t mean to suggest that bullshite degrees or jobs are worthless. They pay the bills. I’m not even suggesting that you can be some big time slacker and get a degree.

In-State: Texas State, Sam Houston, Stephen F. A/ustin, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian.
UTSA would also be on my list as well.
This would be my path although I think ACU has more Baylor/TCUlike admissions.
I have a graduating senior in a similar boat, bad test scores but a 3.9 student with a lot of volunteer and some academic all state credentials to his name.
I went to Angelo State and enjoyed my time there. If you’re aiming for him to get a decent education in a nice town and not aiming for big school experience, it’s a bargain.
My kid would be third generation and probably a full ride but he wanted D1 sports experience.

We're looking at Washington and Stanford, going to both this summer. Only issue is Stanford doesnt honor Western Undergrad Exchange tuition like UW does.
The HS here does a great job at bringing in reps from these schools to talk to the kids.

He should consider the Air Force instead of college. I enjoyed the Air Force very much and learned my trade.
