Just got inspection report back. I am preparing my anus thusly.

Testing the Hydrocarbons, tech found exhaust gasses entering the coolant system and tested up to 223PPM and rising and desired measurement should be less than 50ppm, indicating internal damage to engine and needing to be replaced.

How does that test know that it is not just a blown head gasket?

It doesn't. I had a conversation with him. I get HG quote in the morning, they are closing up shop now.

Does anyone here know the shop book cost of replacing a head gasket on 2015 Cherokee 2.4L?

It is a blown head gasket… or a cracked block

$12,000 for a new motor in a 2016 Dodge Durango at the dealership, if that helps.

Fan clutch is fricked or bad water pump.

Just drive it with the heater on. Congratulations on your “backup radiator”.

Your engine will take a long time to get to operating temperature when sitting at idle.
If the engine is hot and the upper radiator hose is cold, the thermostat is probably not opening.
I’m assuming the heater blows hot when turned on while overheating, so it’s probably not an air pocket.
When you did the radiator was the fluid nasty looking or did any sludge come out when you drained the fluid?
Was the radiator clogged or did it spring a leak?

Back when it was replaced, everything was fine. We went on vacation with my wife's vehicle and came back to a pool of radiator fluid under my car in the driveway.
Also, tech said today hydrocarbons in the fluid are very high, bad head gasket or whatever else could cause that.

Sorry to hear that. Was hoping thermostat.

If they got a "very" positive block test it is most likely a head gasket. The other common causes are generally less likely and usually significantly more expensive.
I hope I am wrong, but a head gasket is likely an 8+ hour job on that engine so while it may be the cheapest fix it is unlikely to be cheap.

Their tester said 250 ppm on the hydrocarbons and it's supposed to be under 50. Sent me pics of the tester reading.

Definitely combustion gases in the cooling system.
I am sure they have, but you also need to check the oil to make sure it isn't milky. If it is at all milky you will want to do a second oil change after just a few miles. The tech should take care of that.
