Good plane? Safe?

I read an article in AOPA magazine about a year ago on it. Really cool/compact plane, but requires that you’re dual rated (SEL and SES).

It's supposed to be a great plane, but when the very experienced lead test pilot crashes and dies in it, you know there's a problem. Also considering Roy Halladay, it's not a problem with the plane, it's a problem with how it's designed to be used and who it's marketed to. It's an interesting story if you haven't looked into it yet.

It's a decent plane.
My help actually uses it to fly to my dock for the daily grass mow.

It's slow, limited range, and only has a useful life of 6000 hours.
You can get a better plane that will go further, faster, and last longer for less money.

My understanding of that accident was he flew himself into a canyon without the performance to get himself out. What fault of the plane was that?

Check out AirCam. Much better airplane.

Looks like a blast, based on what I've read about it.(I saw the AOPA article previously mentioned). I'll never have that kind of money to spend on a "fun" plane unless I hit the Lottery, and I live in Alabama. For that money, I'd rather have a well equipped 90's model A36.

Yeah, we just bought one for our pilot to drop me off at the boat house. So far so good.

I think a plane like that killed John Denver. It’s a great design.

Not nearly fast enough for my needs

Nothing to do with John Denver crash.
Roy Halladays crash seems like 95% buffoonery. I'm not familiar with the details of the test pilot crash.
Looks like a plane that looks easier to fly than it probably really is. I suspect folks without a lot of seaplane time get one for fun and don't have a lot of experience handling the issues that make flying seaplanes challenging.

Back in the post war era, people bought ex-WWII fighter planes for fun. Many recreational pilots couldn't handle the powerful aircraft with their made for speed designs. Before that WWI era biplanes turned up at county fairs all over. People have always tried to fly what they shouldn't in ways they haven't the skill to safely attempt.

I’ve seen better planes in the quad.

You could buy a brand new P-38 for $1500.
