Just another way to target conservative people who live in rural areas.

This certainly is in preparation for EVs becoming more prevalent. EV drivers will not be paying a fuel tax.

And how about private jets, boats, and all the other gas powered recreational shite?
If your burning enough fuel to make it worth your while you can buy off road fuel now and pay no fuel taxes or get a refund or tax credit

Sounds like a massive tax on rural people to pay for the urban people who don't drive.
How do they ensure these taxes go to roads and bridges only...
I bet it'll make its way to government programs
Right, but they are using the Republican playbook. They are taxing on use, so if you dont use it you dont pay the tax. It is similar to toll roads and bridges.
Democrats have weaponized every Republican ideology of the 90's and 00's.

My question wasn't from the technology side, it's from the implementation side. People won't just submit to that and just drive around not complying.
I think if the last year has shown us anything, it's that half of our population yearns to be controlled and told what to do. Spleen and c on z would turn their neighbors in for tampering with the mileage reporting devices on their cars to maintain the supremacy of the state.

They already do something similar in multiple states and IFTA. I don't agree with it obviously, but you're out of your goard if you don't think they can track this.

EV and Hybrid owners in MS pay additional fees annually when they pay for their car tag
How much?
As I recall the additional fee in WI doesn't come anywhere close to the gas taxes one would pay over a year.

Do yoy think the government cares?

A 2019 report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that a federal VMT tax could reduce damage to US highways and lessen traffic congestion by encouraging trucking companies to 'change what kinds of trucks they used or where or when they drove.'
This doesn't make any fricking sense. I actually worked for a trucking company with roughly 1000 tractors and 2000 trailers (which makes it one of the largest trucking companies back in Arkansas) and they didn't let a single mile go wasted. The trucks and trailers were both outfitted with GPS units that made sure they were on course and on time.
Do they think there's tons of trucks out there making unnecessary trips or driving more than they have to? I don't get it.
Plus, this really de-incentivizes electric vehicle ownership. What are they wanting to accomplish here, and how would they even track your mileage?
What about people like me that spend a lot of time with our vehicle idling? I burn maybe 1/4 of my total gas usage idling while staking out or waiting on a perp or backup to arrive. They'll be losing money on people like me, which means they'll more than make it up elsewhere.
One thing's for sure, they've done countless studies on profits and how this'll send the government more money than the current setup. They wouldn't be pushing for it so hard if it would bring in less of our hard earned dollars instead of LOTS more.

No mean tweets though, thank God. Paying tens of thousands of dollars of my money is totally worth not having the media heads that I don't watch freak out every night over a damn tweet.

So now they're upset that people are driving more fuel efficient cars and cutting down on carbon emissions from using new tech... They really are hypocrites on every issue.
Posted on 8/10/21 at 5:49 pm to Cymry Teigr
The miles-traveled tax would equalize the burden between different-fueled vehicles (gas, electric, natural gas, hydrogen, etc), replacing the gas tax. At least that’s the theory...

Great! We will eventually look like Cuba, where everyone is driving a car made in the 1950s. USA will have a definitive date line pre/post tax.

This is to go after suburbanites and rural voters who are mostly Republican's and conservatives. they travel the furthest to work vs. inner city walking, using public transit.
Literally taxation without representation. I remember reading about a group of guys that got really pissed about this in the past, wish I could remember what that book was called

No, it's not.
You may not agree with it but it was passed by people voted to the senate.
The colonies had zero representation in the Parliament.
