This guy looks like he's trying. He's the kind of person who probably won't be homeless long and would benefit from social services. The ones shooting drugs or walking around randomly screaming obscenities aint going anywhere without being involuntarily committed.

While people look at homeless people, in general, as lazy.. which many of them are, there also some who have fallen on hard times and have too much pride to accept any type of services.

They have no problem going out and about looking for things people are throwing away, but they will just not take handouts.

I watched something before where these people would bring the homeless items every so often and there were some they had to wait until they left their area to go put the items there because they wouldn't accept them, but if it was there when they returned they would use whatever was left there.

There's a group that invaded my favorite town. They live in tents, don't do much of anything but kind of ruin the local feel of the place.

They aren't on hard times, just liking the lifestyle for some reason

Correct. What most of us are saying is this is extremely abnormal behavior, caused by some combination of substance abuse, mental illness or personality disorder. It’s a lifestyle choice triggered by an underlying issue.

These aren’t the types of folks that congregate at the soup kitchen. Taking away services won’t eradicate society of these homeless types.

I agree that these people infringe on normal people and society much more than the random guy at the freeway off ramp.

Quite possibly, but not necessarily mental illness.

Every single person on this planet has some underlying issues. Some of us have things that cause us to be more "normal" than others, but this type of lifestyle used to be far more normal than it is today.

The only difference is social acceptance.

If you had little support, wanted to drift more than work, and didn't care if you didn't have a permanent place to call home, it would be normal to you.

Right. But our argument is that anyone so abnormal to the point they choose to be homeless is suffering from something more than some minor issue or personality quirk.

A lot of these people do have families and support systems, which makes their decisions all the more abnormal. It goes well beyond just being lazy.

Also, it amazes me on a daily basis that New Orleans allows homeless tents to be seen in the Central Business District, Superdome, Convention Center areas which is the Mecca for tourists but will do sweeps along the parade routes during Mardi Gras if you put a ladder or sofa out too early

And if you give an inch with that kind of shite, be prepared to give miles.

As I've been in portland, I've seen so much of this. Tents on sidewalks of nice residential streets. If a car were to accidentally come up on the curb, who er was inside would never see it coming. Its a sad sight, matter of fact the only time I got any humor out of it was yesterday.

Saw a wheelchair with one leg up in the air between two small metal trashcans (one of which was on fire) in an unfortunate part of town, made me think of oweo for a second.

Bc the ACLU fights any government effort to clean the streets. It says something when even the homeless are obese.

would imply that you had some sort of mental illness, no? I mean no person in his right mind would be ok living that way. Maybe not mentally ill in the fact of needing

I went to a downtown la community event and someone spoke about the homelessness problem; this was the #1 roadblock to government and law enforcement intervention.

Not really. It's pretty well known these days that cheaper food is vastly more unhealthy for you.

Not idea, really. Many don't want help. Even if it is their own choice, you can't help but walk or drive by and feel for them. They're human beings and they very obviously have problems, usually mental.

It seems that we as a society have just decided to tolerate it and let them live wherever they want.

My understanding is that even if we wanted laws enabling the police to clean up the streets, the ACLU will fight it.

You can take away the services, but police can’t physically move/remove the homeless.

So the ACLU would rather let them live in filth with no services, and their idea of help is to fight moves in court.

Brilliant!

So what is the answer? I genuinely want to know. I was just in Portland and San Francisco too and it is a problem but not one with an easy fix.

There’s certainly an easy fix, you don’t let them sleep there. No sleeping between 6pm and 6am. Very easy solution. Goes for someone drunk too.

You simply have to have a backbone to deal with people that don’t want to abide by the average person of the community. No different then an HOA.

I worked in social work for 10 years and there’s a certain portion of the population that simply wants to live by doing the absolute minimum they have to in order to survive. Really no different then a workaholic just on the opposite side of the spectrum. This portion will do everything that they are allowed to do to survive on the minimum amount of effort.

You allow them to live their lifestyle, but with effort by traveling. Provide them with areas they can live outside of town.

The reason they live in town is that’s where they get handouts, soup kitchens, church hand outs, and most importantly that’s where they beg for money. They know exactly what time and place to be in each area to get what they need. You think they are working a stoplight when there’s no cars? Hell no, they only work when there’s traffic so they get their money quick. They know exactly where to go every day to get free food. This baptist church has free lunch on Thursdays and a good tomato soup and grilled cheese and this Catholic Church has free dinner on Wednesdays. These people are survivors. Give them an inch and they take 2 inches until you take the extra inch back with physical force.

You make areas where it’s illegal to ask for handouts on the street and illegal to sleep. It takes an actual backbone, but you do that and they all go somewhere else where living is easier for them.
