Early in development the muzzle blast from the gun would FOD out the engines. They had to come up with a way to divert the smoke and fumes away from the engines so they didn’t choke.
ETA: The recoil doesn’t slow the airplane down. Per buddies that fly it.

That’s a big fricking dose of American freedom.

I think it's like 20 ft long.

My favorite aircraft, ever since getting the Cobra Rattler when I was in first grade.

Nothing more badass than a Huey crew chief on a Gau

I love the fact that the myth of the cannon stalling out the plane even exists. That’s one bad MF-ing gun

Re: recoil
I attended a Rotary Club luncheon that an A-10 pilot spoke at about 30 years ago. He said the recoil changed the angle of attack by a couple of degrees nose up. Don't recall him saying it slowed down the airspeed.
I've also recently read that the standard depleted uranium rounds are something like $52 a copy.

We were in a tight spot in Yusufiyah once and as military contractors didn’t have the resources to call air strikes as much as regular military.
Somehow the call got relayed and a couple hogs came in at not more than 100 feet above grade and saved our arse and I will never forget that glorious sound.

That was one badass plane!

The aircraft is armed with a General Dynamics GAU-8/A Avenger 30mm cannon, mounted in the nose of the aircraft.
It's a 30mm cannon with wings and a cockpit mounted on it.

It's still hard for me to grasp 70 rounds in one second. One trigger pull and there goes 70 extra large banana sized bullets at the target. Wow.

quote:You are correct. The gun was developed first and then the Air Force got bids from the aircraft manufacturers to build a plane to carry it.
You mean the gun they built the A10 Warthog around.

When I couldn’t get Marines CAS in the stack I always checked to see if there were any Warthogs on station.

I have a replica of that ordinance.
I can't imagine having to dodge one of those rounds, or many.

Likely around that time now later than 90 because that is about when the greens went out of uniform. I still had mine up until a few years ago.
