SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — On July 9, an 8-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after being buried under sand during a freak accident at Fort Ord Dunes State Park. Park rangers said that boy was conscious and breathing when he was rescued, but he was completely submerged under sand for several minutes while first responders and family tried to dig him out.

The boy and friends had dug a hole roughly 4-6 feet deep, according to park ranger. The boy was sitting in the hole when it collapsed around him.

The family shared photos of their son before and after the incident. The mother told the Marina Fire Department that the above photo was taken 10 minutes before the collapse and it could've been the last photo she had of her son.

After the rescue, he was eventually flown to Stanford for medical care. He is now alive and doing well, Marina Fire Department reported.

Yeah, letting your kids get in a hole that’s deeper than they are tall when it’s something as unstable as beach sand is a bad idea.

In case any of you are wondering what would actually happen.

Basically the sand will fill in any space it’s given so every time you breath, the sand fills in the space where your chest was.

Basically limiting your ability to actually take a breath over time and suffocating you

Maybe I’m being naive here but I’d be digging like a fricking maniac to get my kid out of there. No way it takes me “several minutes”

I remember in the mid 1980s there was a kid in the New Orleans area who died from a soil collapse on the river batture.

There used to be the nicest little old man at the Shreveport VA that had something similar happen in his childhood.

He and friends dug a tunnel through a sand pile. When he was inside (said it was a Sunday morning) it collapsed leaving him folded in two, head on his knees till they could dig him out.

Apparently it fractured his L-Spine and 2 of the vertebrae fused into a near perfect triangle leaving him permanently essentially looking at his feet bent forward.

He was a decorated WW2 Infantry Scout. That's right, he passed the physical and served in Northern Europe behind enemy lines as a scout ahead of all the rest of the troops.

He'd giggle when I teased him about being in the wrong war, he could've really given them hell in trench warfare.

Maybe don’t sit your frickin kid in a sand hole for social media approval and you don’t have to fear aforementioned sand hole suffocating him to death when it inevitably falls in on him.

Yeah, I will never understand how some parents can let their kids do such obviously dangerous things. I know parents make mistakes, but....damn, that was an obvious disaster waiting to happen.
