Couldn't they just buy some pre-cast PS concrete piles? I don't think obtaining such simple components is the problem. It is installing them.

Close the section of bridge. Removed the damage parts and throw up some temporary structure like what they did for the east span of twins span bridge after Katrina while new piles and span(s) are being built. Then put them in place. Texas should be be able to handle that.
Huh?
From the looks of it on the video the next set of pilings on each side of the damaged set of pilings are not damaged at the moment and as one poster already said that they might have to remove the deck segments to free the barge. Instead of shutting it down for months and trying to repair the pilings in place. Put up something like this. The distance between the undamaged set of pilings does not appear to be greater than 90m so it would not have to touch the damaged set of pilings at all. Then when the new pilings are ready to install, take down the temporary span and drive the new piles next to the old piles and reinstall the deck spans.
It is not perfect and some of the heavy loads like 18 wheelers or minivans full of fatties will have to be detoured around due to weight restrictions but it is a hell of a lot better having to deal with a closed bridge full an extended period of time.
Now obviously if they can repair the existing pilings in a quick time frame then get some extra burritos and tell los hombres to get at it.

I agree. That should be a high rise bridge if they are going to allow boat and barge traffic to travel under it. Especially if they are going to fleet tank barges north of it.

Yep that is just an environmental disaster waiting to happen. Just imagine the clusterf**k that it would be if that barge was carrying a hazardous chemical and started leaking.

Just fricking great. I commute to Houston every week for work. I’m sure this will add numerous hours to my commute over the next several months.

Everyday right here. Easily added another 30 minutes one way when it happened in the spring.

I loved when the barge company came on the news and apologized for their frick up but didn’t say one thing about paying for it.
This is a bigger deal than a plant fire, they have literally shut down the busiest interstate in the gulf south with no remorse.

There are tons of great Louisiana people who have moved to TX over the decades. I believe 10K moved to TX alone last year.

I went on the Perry Castaneda Map site and found the 1955 topo map of Highlands just to see how much the area had changed.
Wowser. Back then, there was barely a channel north of the where the interstate bridge is now. Somehow, a place to load and store barges was carved out of the wetlands. Wonder who decided that was a good idea?

You have a link for that?

the really bad part is usually the people that leave are educated forward-thinking type people. The ones that stay are more likely to be garbage people. It really is a compounding negative for the poor states and compounding positive for the better states.
