If you look on google earth they have Dolphins on the Northwest side of the bridge and the fleet is north of that. The loose barges took out a couple of those dolphins before taking out the bridge

This is the same cap that got hit a few months ago LOL. You can see the repair collars and framework. Can't believe that cap is cantilevering like that.

Its going to need some temporary bents to get the girders jacked back up to proper elevation. Should be an interesting fix.

Close the section of bridge. Removed the damage parts and throw up some temporary structure like what they did for the east span of twins span bridge after Katrina while new piles and span(s) are being built. Then put them in place. Texas should be be able to handle that.

Katrina didn’t damage the pilings, this is a completely different scenario.

They have to get those barges out and that's not going to be easy. They will probably do some more damage getting them out. I think they will have to remove the deck section, set new piles and then put it back in place.

One of the loaded barges are beached on a mud flat and as the water recedes it’s just going to make things more difficult.

Tilman Fertitta has a decision. Does he donate to fix the bridge?

True but this is almost the exact scenario that the designers of the LPC had in mind when they left spare parts out in the lake? They knew the bridge was going to get hit sooner or later and they left spare parts so that all they had to was remove the bridge deck, drive new piles, put a new pile cap on, and put the bridge deck back on and the bridge would be back open in a few days.

If they do not have spare parts ready to go like the LPC does, can't they just remove the bridge deck segments on both sides of the destroyed pilings set them on barges and set them aside. Then throw up a temporary bridge that spans the distance where both deck segments and anchor it on the ends of the bridge that where not hit by the barge until the spare parts are manufactured. Then when the new pilings and pile caps are manufactured, remove the temporary bridge deck, drive new pilings to replace the damaged pilings, install the new pile cap, and finally set the spans back on top.

The more important question to me is not how to fix the bridge, but how to protect the bridge? If this is the second time that the bridge has sustained major damage from getting hit by a barge in the last few months then Tx might want build a better barrier around the bridge pilings.

They have dolphins north of the the bridge but these loose barges rolled right through them in this case. There isn’t much they could have done to protect the bridge

The problem is, they need to secure the barges better in the fleet and they should have has fleet boats standing by downstream of the fleet, they should have had multiple boats on the fleet.

Problem is, you have to have a retractable pilothouse to get under that bridge to get to the fleet and there just aren’t that many of those boats available. I looked on AIS and there was only 2 retractables on the north side of the bridge at the time of the incident. That’s not nearly enough

Time for a high rise and with a wider arch or opening. Texas has a lot of fracking money.

If they cannot find a better way to protect the bridge then they need to bite to bullet and replace the bridge with a different type of bridge like a cable stay, an arch bridge or any type of bridge where the piers are not in the water. I-10 at that location is too important of a travel corridor (especially during a natural disaster) for it to be shutdown for an extended period of time because a barge broke loose.

Now would be a good time to do it to because you can pull a Louisiana and get the feds to fast track it and pay for it like they did the twin spans bridge in NOLA after Katrina since it was part of a natural disaster. If I was a Houston commuter I would be emailing and calling my representatives everyday while I am stuck in the cluster f**k that is going to be the detur caused from that.
