When we adopted a Great Dane I knew they didn’t live very long.
Every day that passes is a blessing, sometimes we lose sight of that

I'm so sorry for your loss. Prayers sent. It is hard putting your beloved pet to sleep. Been there. It will be tough times for a while. But remember... Rainbow Bridge, my friend.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I've only seen my dad cry twice due to sadness.
Once when his mother died, and once when our family dog died.

I had to put down my black lab a few years ago. Of course I did it the morning before I had to drive from BR to Corpus Christi for work. I sobbed like a bitch for about 2 hours until I dehydrated myself. It a good drive

When I had to do it I kept telling myself that putting them down is the most loving and compassionate thing you can do for them. It is truly a gift for them in their time of pain.

I know you and I have never gotten along, but seriously man, I’m sorry. That’s horrible and I hate for anyone to go through that. I’m genuinely hoping the best for you to get through this.

Don't mean to double post but I cried like a baby when I had to put my kitty to sleep. But my sister sent me this poem. Hope it helps:
I know that it must be different,
Now that I am no longer there.
I realize how much I was loved,
and how much you really cared.
I know it will be hard at first,
when you look around for me.
Expecting to find me in my bed,
or beside my favorite tree.
Someday you will begin to see,
although it will take some time.
The happy times you shared with me,
the memories are yours and mine.
I'll remember you, my friend,
just how much you meant to me.
So please dont grieve and dont be sad,
it was jut my time to leave.
We'll see each other, there's no doubt.
When there will be no sadness and no grief,
for now I'm running and playing
with happiness and peace.
I know that it must be different,
Now that I am no longer there.
I realize how much I was loved,
and how much you really cared.
I know it will be hard at first,
when you look around for me.
Expecting to find me in my bed,
or beside my favorite tree.
Someday you will begin to see,
although it will take some time.
The happy times you shared with me,

I'll remember you, my friend,

We'll see each other, there's no doubt.
When there will be no sadness and no grief,
for now I'm running and playing
with happiness and peace.

I personally do not plan on outliving another dog. I may get one if I know in advance I will die first. Hurts too much.

I feel for you. The pain eases over time.

I'm sorry, Rondo. There is no love as pure in it's own way as the love you have for your dog, man. I'd be lost without mine. If I got to make the rules for a day, I'd extend their lives threefold. You'd have like two dogs your whole life.

Per the vet's instructions, I had given my 14 year old Wiley a knock out pill before bringing him yo the vet to be put down. Watching the pill take effect, slowly, was almost unbearable.

Sorry, Baw. Your journey together has ended. Your next travel partner is pretty cool too, and waiting for you to come get him/her. Don't wait to long.
