I work in a field that should be fairly black and white? Building/construction/engineering

You ask certain people for specific information on an email. And they proceed to respond with a word vomit answer with an endless maze of options and possibilities. And then a few minutes later you get the dreaded follow up phone call from the same person wanting to further expand and ramble on about their text book they already sent me.

When all I was asking for was a simple dimension or some specification about the material they were providing.

People love to hear themselves talk and/or type.

Drives me insane as well. I usually respond with a copy and paste of the original inquiry.

Is this thread retaliation for the whacked “eating beaver” topic?

Upper management expects word vomit for everything these days. I hate it.

Because if they give you the wrong answer they’re on the hook for said answer. People are covering their arse when you’re in a world where you can lose your job over a simple question back firing.

I work with a guy that is overly condescending and it infuriates me. Instead of just saying, “I agree.”…there’s always a long winded reason why he agrees but for a different reason than you should. It’s like he has to prove hes the smartest one in the room to make it apparent im just lucky to have gotten to that conclusion and he actually got to it by overthinking.

Just now paying attention? we are living in a post-truth world. Dems patented the word salad never be accountable for answering a single god-damned question and everyone allows it so it's become the norm.

Will never hire a guy that starts most responses with, “Don’t quote me on this…”

I dont give it to them. Has had mixed results. Sales management loves it, engineering management surprisingly split. Some love it, some consistently ask for more.

When I get a request to "provide more color" or my favorite one I heard once "more meat and potatoes" my head usually hits the desk.

Sometimes it's because they don't know the answer, and can't or won't admit it.

And sometimes it's because the question is not as simple as you think it is.

Ever watch congressional hearings? It’d be a yes or no question and the person in question would ramble something totally unrelated.

Nope. My team is on point with the direct answers.

And as a result, always end up fielding about 90% of the questions. People are pussies these days. They live their whole lives trying to get paid to make zero decisions

He’s just trying to tell you what he “thinks”, he doesn’t have the answers 100 percent so he doesn’t want you running your mouth. He’s giving you an idea and you need to see if it’s viable.

“I don’t know, let me find out” used to be a respectable response.

Nowadays even the girl at the parts counter believes “fake it till you make it” is an honorable way to live.

I guess it stands to reason because they grew up hearing stuff like “if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying” type stuff.

My follow up pet peeve is people who refuse to own up to mistakes.

Maybe it's because I'm older, confident in my job or just don't give a shite but I'll openly admit a mistake even if I'm on a call with 30 people.

You look shadier trying to cover up a bone headed move or ignoring it.

Just admit it and move on.

George Carlin said some people think that the more words you use the more important you appear. Nope.
