Is this legal? I was at a bar and there was this family there who had a son drinking a bud light. I saw the mom went to the bar and brought back beers for the family.

The guy looked to be over 21, but are you able to serve people with disabilities? I mean a bar can't legally sell to someone who is drunk or under the influence. What about people with developmental disabilities? I mean are people with Down's syndrome really able to comprehend what drinking alcohol means? Are they able to comprehend when they have had enough or truly understand what drinking does?

Why do they need to do this:

I mean are people with Down's syndrome really able to comprehend what drinking alcohol means? Are they able to comprehend when they have had enough or truly understand what drinking does?

If:

quote:

Maybe the family chooses to include the son in what they do rather than lock them out of experiences.

If you want to see the richest person with Downs syndrome ever, try refusing service to an adult, only because of Downs syndrome.

If the person is of age why not? The family probably knows his limit and the guy obviously isn't driving.

There’s so many unknowns here to judge.

There are many highly functional people with DS.

I felt bad laughing at the “Down’s vote” comment but then thought about it and it’s just too witty to not laugh at.

Up’s vote.

Saw an older couple with an obviously older Down’s syndrome son having dinner at Commanders and the son was ordering the wine. And he was drinking a lot better and more expensive wine than me.

Looks like the OP started the thread while possibly not knowing anyone with Downs. I understand the question, it just feels like the question indicates OP has formed an opinion about this. Just because they have Downs does not mean their life experiences should be limited, especially if family is there watching out for them.

Huh? He has a mental disability. That has nothing to do with his ability to drink. You would be surprised how much someone with downs syndrome can understand.

Yeah, there is the age, but in many states you cannot serve alcohol to people who are visibly drunk or intoxicated or not in full comprehension of their facilities.

That's why you can't serve 15 year olds in bars even if they the family is cool with it and isn't allowing the kid to drive. What's the difference?
