It's CYA. The manager can't say they weren't informed about x, y or z if it ever comes to that.

It's also an acknowledgement to the manager that the author is aware and involved with whatever is going on.

It could also be like a situation I have with this one lugnut... the only two ways he will respond to emails are:

1. It's extremely important to him. It doesn't matter if it's important to the organization or someone else, only if he thinks it's important.

2. His manager is CC'd.

So it may be you or it may not. Either way, just...

My boss 'read requests' every email he sends out. Just so he knows that you saw it and he can start the clock on how long it takes you to research the answer/get back to him with the information.

I deal with one guy who always pulls that "not my job" card. He caught me on a bad day and I replied something to the effect of "you don't seem to have to do much for your job." I don't think I've heard from him more than twice in about 2 or 3 years since.

I always one up them, and CC the regional guys and higher. They all know I'm an a-hole anyway.

Douche: Look at me I worked late.

I used to have to CC the department head for every email I sent to anyone in that department just so I would get a response or what I was requesting got done. My manager told me to CC them every time and if I didn't get a response in 2 hours to resend the email and CC him and the manager.

When I worked corporate I cc'd my manager on everything because I didn't want to get my arse chewed.

ETA: He was also a complete dick. I got my arse chewed for making a good suggestion to an associate in the office and I didn't CC him.

My opinion: That's bullshite. As someone who manages several, I don't want to have a copy of every damn email sent to my crew. When/if there is a problem, then we can dig and find out who is at fault.

Would you act any differently if this person had not CCed your boss?

Does the sender know you would/would not act any differently?

If one of my employees cc me on all emails I would fire them. I dont have time for that crap. Its fine if it is something I need to be aware of but them getting a quote from a vendor would not be acceptable.

I have an exchange server and I can look at any email that was sent across my servers.

Any time he is doing something even SLIGHTLY "abnormal" for our job, he will be sure to send an email and copy our bosses, sometimes he'll copy our whole department. One time he had to work in the evening (for a scheduled, planned occurence he is in charge of). Sure enough he sends an email at like 8:30 that was utterly pointless, I think it was somethign like "so and so [one of the part timers that works evenings] is doing a great job, just wanted to give some recognition!" I'm pretty sure I'm the only one that sees through this garbage, as it was just an excuse to show everyone he was on-site that late. Or other times he may be in town for personal/pleasure, and may swing by the building for like 2 minutes for nothing realy in particular, and of course do the same thing and fire off a pointless email. Just so everyone can see he's there on a Saturday.

I do it. A few points. I work for corperate America. 1. My manager always forget my responsibilities when it comes to yearly elavuations and talks of raises. Like every time. This gives me a log of talking points should he bring up specific projects. 2. People in the corperate environment are dirty as hell, and will through you under the bus if they are getting in trouble. I got burned a few times before I figured this out. Communication through emails and ccing my sup has saved my arse. One sup reported me to HR, then I pulled my emails detailing how I did my job, and they magically went away.

Prove to their boss they are doing the things expected of them... they're insecure on that front.

Also to stack the deck against whoever they are emailing. Make it seem your message has higher-up buy-in.

Typically a sign of weakness but also sometimes necessary.

im pretty sure its done so you let their manager know you are requesting them to do work, which will take away time from whatever else their manager is expecting them to do.

its like a courtesy thing. "hey, manager, I need your employee to do something, so at least part of his/her day will be spent fulfilling my request. please account for this in your reconciliation"
