People who ask you to “donate to a charity” in lieu of a gift are semi-assholes

They aren’t going to get a gift anyway if they are over the age of 18 so they are conning the system to
1. Feel better about themselves
2. Let everyone know how virtuous they are and how much you suck
I’m supposed to give money away to some anonymous people because someone I know survived another year?
Hey look, if a person throws themselves in front of a car to save an old lady and says - “in lieu of medical cost donations, send money to the local soup kitchen”, I’d dry hump that like a beagle puppy’s pillow...but you just LIVED.
You didn’t die for 365 days. Congrats on the achievement. That doesn’t make you better, it makes you older.

I’ve never seen this phrase except in obituaries, and your whole gripe seems meaningless in that situation

I saw some dumb bitch on FB post something bitching about how only 10 of her “awesome friends” had donated to her birthday charity and that if the other 400 or so didn’t pony up at least 5 bucks apiece, they needn’t ever come to her for anything. Never mind that she was already something like $125 over her goal.
The responses were as to be expected...solid gold. Suffice it to say she was minus a number of friends after that post.

Of all the things to complain about in this world, and you choose this? In a college football Saturday no less.

Damn, you're such a miserable human being. It's pathetic.

Facebook has made this really annoying

This is a strange hill to die on...

Obligatory “The Human Fund”

The horror. Someone wants to feel good about themselves on their birthday.

Textbook projection. Just because you're a piece of shite doesn't mean they're trying to tell you that by doing a good thing.

You don't have to, dipshit. If you know the person and want to give to the charity, do it. If not, don't.

It's a social media thing. Girls, usually, asking for donations to their favorite charity instead of gifts. They even post a link to some sort of charity GoFundme type of app. It's retarded b/c I don't buy birthday gifts for friends unless they're throwing a legitimate party with food, booze, etc and then I usually bring a bottle of booze if they're really good friends.
It's just another "look at me" type of behavior

Today is my birthday. All week Facebook has been hounding me to select a charity to push.
It’s more of a Facebook thing than a selfish a hole thing.

Yep. They wanted me to do one of those for my birthday.
I gave it critical thought. Most people have hundreds of Facebook friends. Even at $5 per fundraiser, that adds up to thousands of dollars just in Facebook campaigns (on top of everyone's pet causes they already do).
I figured it would just be annoying so I didn't bother.

You should. I did too. It’s a classic example of how social media and their gimmicks bring out the absolute tool in some people.

I just consider myself a charity and add it to my bar tab

GoFundMe needs to be limited to REAL charity cases, not LSU student in sixth year looking for you to pay their tab. Thanks Fournette

I've already died on this hill for the mom's that do this for their 2-4 year old Bdays. So good luck OP.
I agree with you.
Talking about what gifts someone should get for you is tacky as hell. Just don't bring it up. If you are given something great if not so be it. I don't understand the idea of asking for a specific gift at all unless its a wedding or birth with a registry.

Just had a SIL do this. Set a goal of $200 for a charity and she totaled $5. I LOLed she wasn’t gonna get a gift anyway!
