Those sticks were in use a LONG time before any sensors or lasers ever showed up. Just a simple divider between what you buy and the next person buys. Put the internet down for a while!

The idea is to highlight the separation between the current and upcoming customer. Doing it the traditional way allows the upcoming customer to start loading the belt. Doing it the way the OP suggests just wastes time for the next customer and cashier.

I didn’t even realize there was a sensor involved. I thought this was primarily for the benefit of the cashier knowing when to stop scanning the current customer’s items.
