All of my friends, both male and female, call me by my last name.

My boss was military. I notice he refers to me by my last name, but not most women. I think it’s because I am more buddy-buddy with him. That being said, we call our VP by a shortened version of his last name. I guess it’s just whatever they prefer or don’t mind. It isn’t cognizant or intentional.

Officers of the same rank or above junior grades will use first names almost exclusively.

Except the USAF, they’re all on a first name basis :)

If you really want to blow your own mind, try putting a Mr. or Ms. in front of people’s last names.

When you share an ice cream break with a man, the bond transcends last names.

Ohh I’m well aware of all that. I was in 6 1/2 years but we all went by mostly first names and a few nicknames in my unit. We called Jackson Jackson because his first name was Hubert and of course LT LT. Other than that we called you by whatever you went by at home during work or after hours. Getting called by your last name ended after OSUT.

You don’t have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don’t have to call me Charley Pride
You don’t have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore
Even though you’re on my fightin side
So I’ll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin in the rain
You don’t have to call me darlin, darlin.
You never even called me by my name

My parents and wife don’t know most of my friends first names. Hell, I’ve forgotten most of them too.
