And you failed to understand the elementary concept on how this will affect the consumer when the owner raises prices due to paying his carhops more.

If you are telling me to tip to make up the difference in their wages, then you have essentially raised the cost of my food anyway. What does it matter who directly pays for it?

Sonic is fast food, frick tipping at a fast food place. Call me cheap all you want, I don't tip for a call in pick up either. If it was a restaurant I really like and they had a kitchen line then I would tip the kitchen but if you do nothing but take an order and hand it to me, then no tip for you. All this coming from someone who tips in the 30% range when i go out.

I had the argument about tipping on a deep sea fishing trip a couple months back. My first trip deep sea fishing and it was about 1500 for 5 of us, the guy who paid up front tipped 20% on top and I asked him why. He explained you are expected to tip even though the 1500 was a quoted price for their service. I really don't understand all the tipping bullshite this country has gotten into their heads. I do concrete and when I give you a quote, that is my price. I don't look for a tip and I go above and beyond what I tell you I will do and expect nothing more than my original quote.

Some carhops make under minimum wage. I know several people who have worked there in the past

bullshite. I knew several people that worked at the one in luling, and they all made better than min wage but let everyone think they didn't so they'd get tips. Plus they didn't have to claim cash.

If carhops made below min wage, there would be a tip line on your receipt.

I used to tip when it was always nice high school kids to show my support for them being responsible. Nowadays it seems like it is nothing but old and trashy people working at sonic.

The new economy. Forward!

I was a car hop in high school. Plenty of people didn't tip, but plenty of people did. It all balanced out. On good nights I would take home around $100 cash. This was in 2000. Granted I didn't have hardly any expenses being 16 years old, but I saved up over $3,000 in 5 months. Great money for a teen.

What if they're working at sonic while they're getting their degree?

You won't support that?

Why don't they display their wage on their uniform. How the hell should I know they don't make minimum wage?

Agreed, the tipping thing is out of control, I would gladly rather pay extra for food at sonic than try to figure out telepathically if the person needs a tip to survive or not.

OP: tipping is stupid. Everyone wants one nowadays. Even if you get bad service or don't even like the employee you still have to tip. Do you realize how silly that is?

The carhops said they made about $4 an hour and the rest of their income came from tips

figure a few hot dogs with a side and a drink is gonna take a car what...20 minutes to finish eating and leave? Carhops service how many cars at one? Let's be extremely conservative and say 2. That's about 6 cars per hour they're waiting on. Let's say each vehicle tipped $1 (granted some cars won't tip at all, but most will probably tip at LEAST one dollar, more like a couple bucks probably). That's $10/hour ($6 of which is cash straight into the pocket not taxed) which is pretty in line with an entry level fast food server.

I don't see the problem. You go into that line of work knowing the drill. I worked at a car wash one summer in college. My whole life I've known you're supposed to tip at car washes. Many peopel didn't tip...I didn't get pissed, it was just unfortunate. I still ended up making around $12/hour with my check+tips.

Actually it would just mean one extra car which means more tip money. Further crapping on OP's whine fest.

I agree. As someone who has had to make a living from tips, I always over tip people. Like it is really going to affect you so much if you leave $80 instead of $70. It sucks working for tips.
