False.

Sonic should pay their workers more. Their workers should demand more.

What happens is that people use their debit cards and don't even get an option to leave a tip on there, I think. I wouldn't know since i don't eat fast food but mother of God, this tipping craze is really sad. Just pay them more and save us the hassle.

Most Sonic workers are high school kids, to be fair. Once they turn 18, they can do basically the same job for a lot more money in a sit-down restaurant.

They still have the same bargaining rights as everyone else.

Also, this claim that the workers make less than minimum wage is patently false - unless Sonic is breaking labor laws.

More effort goes into making the food than carrying the food, tips should go to the kitchen.

I know several people who have worked there in the past. The carhops said they made about $4 an hour and the rest of their income came from tips.
They lied to you.

Part of the reason why I rarely eat out anymore. Tip jars EVERYWHERE. Izzos, Subway, even saw one at a gas station by the cashier.

No tipping at Sonic, brah. When you make it less efficient for me to order inside and avoid the delivery, then I think you're running a racket.

We have this thread every 3 months.
One of the mods should make this a sticky.

Haven't read this entire thread, but there is a formula to determine tips based on percentage of sales delivered by their employees (the one up the street from me is 8%)...

If their hourly +8% of sales delivered is under minimum wage - Sonic is required to fill in the rest UP TO MINIMUM WAGE.

Most get $5/hr+ after they are there for 30 days and average $4-$5 an hour in tips. They're doing fine...

FWIW - I asked a bunch of their carhops because my roomate's ex's kid was considering working there... and I was curious.

I still usually tip the change from the nxt dollar amt every time (or add a little change UP TO $1 total).

ETA:

Also - Taxes are not taken out of their hourly wages based on sales like at a normal restaurant.

I'm a tip everywhere type, FTR.

As somebody below said - for # of vehicles served - Sonic IS very efficient. Just doesn't seem like it because you just drive up and order every time... not wait in line behind other cars.

Carhops just slow shite down. Make a drive thru and a dine in option like bk and mcd

The sonic model is the same thing, except you actually have more people designated to taking your order making your drinks, bagging your food, etc.. versus someone taking orders, making the drinks and bagging the food all by themselves. Sonic has three different groups for each of these.

I would wager Sonic would serve 30 cars faster than BK or MCD could a line of 30 cars through a drive through.

I can sit in my car and listen to XM and not have to get in a line with the great unwashed.
Then, my food is delivered to me.

I tip $1 and the change, or $2.

Cheap doesn't impress anyone, son.

I'll tip if they roll my food out on skates. I'm not going to tip some big mama that walks my food out.

Some Sonics have drive thrus. That's where it's at.

It has nothing to do with being cheap.

The person at the window at MdDonalds doesn't get a tip for handing me a nasty arse burger. Why should the person at Sonic? Just because they have to walk 20 feet to hand me may nasty arse burger.

I suppose you tip the gas station clerk when you go inside to by a drink, right? If not how is that any different?
