I think we are just arguing past each other at different points. I was arguing against your statement that you would only buy a beer/meal for a vet who joined for, what you perceive to be, the right reasons. I don't care why they joined, only what they did with it. Shitheads who remain shitheads are not worthy of respect, I agree.

Honest question,: How many people who serve in the military actually get in the "line of fire"? 10%? 20%? 50%? >50%?
Honest answer, it was too many to give you the right to ask this question. You have obviously never served in the military. You belittling the people that sign up not knowing when they will be called upon to defend your rite to be a fricking prick, makes me sick.

Oh come off it. We have long since passed the point where the American military defends "our rights". That's a convenient fiction that looks good on a recruitment poster or a TV ad.
Our military protects our interests (even says so in the new Navy spot). It allows us to live in relative ease and comfort and enjoy a quality of life unimaginable to previous generation because we control all the shipping routes around the world and just about every strategic point.
Our "freedoms" and "rights" are not in danger from any foreign threat. Internal, maybe.
But I'm quite thankful for the position atop the heap and all the luxuries that come with it.

My O&G experience: engineers right out of college have exceptionally high opinions of themselves
They lose that after about five years on the job
By retirement age they are worn down to the nub by the job like automotive assembly line workers

I wouldn't really say the military is a job. It's basically welfare for those who can't get real jobs.
The fact that i'm not shocked by your comment says a lot about how fricked up this country is. We are regressing as a nation and it has everything to do with our youth and the mentality that everything is owed to them. No one takes responsibility for their actions, it's the fault of someone else, the way they were raised, or society.
Putting down people that join the military and calling it welfare for people that can't get real jobs, proves that you don't have the mental capacity to have an opinion. Don't have kids, thanks.

My experience has been that those who were the furthest from the actual friction of conflict tend to be the most outspoken.
I think you underestimate just how much these people hate us and what they're actually capable of, but that's a bit of a different discussion.
Iraq, for all its bumbling frick ups and buffoonery by the brass and civilian leadership, did work as a honey trap for about six or seven years. Guys like Zarqawi would have found their way to Europe or the States eventually and would have wrecked shite.
But yes, my estimate is that somewhere in the range of 5 - 8% of the military is ever actually in real danger of getting their arses blown off.
But for that group that knows what that's like...

You people kill me. Lets eliminate the military and find out how quick your freedoms and rights come in to danger. I'm not sure what's going on with this young generation but we are regressing with everything that matters. SWJ's rule.

I personally don't know anyone who wants to eliminate it, but I do believe the days of having to provide "military welfare" to so many foreign countries is over.

Yes this needs to go away. The point that Byte Me is very valid though you take our military away and the sacrifices these military people make and this country goes to hell. Sure some branches of the military are easier than the other but remember the military services rely on each other. The people bitching in here forget a lot of these guys have to leave families and personal shite behind at a moments notice. Some will sacrifice there lives some won't but for the posters saying dumb people or rejects join the military is just stupid. We need the military to maintain our everyday present life even if some people don't appreciate it.

I respect you as a poster and think you are a good person, but we need to agree to disagree on this.

Byte I bet you asked 100 youths today about the "honor" I bet 70% couldn't tell you what it meant. They probably only heard it in the movies.
