Big changes to the way the GED exam is scored will make it easier for people to pass two years after the test underwent a massive overhaul that led to steep drops in the number of students taking it and passing it.

The score students will need to pass the exam is dropping from 150 to 145, part of changes first announced in late January by the GED Testing Service.

The best news for GED test takers: While the change doesn't take effect until March 1, it is retroactive to January 2014. That means anyone who earned a score of between 145 to 149 on the four tests that are part of the GED will now have passing scores. In Michigan, that impacts 700 people.

Isn't part of the whole "following your dream and achieving success" thing the process of actually working for and earning it? This is just cheapening the process.

but there's a pretty sad part to this, if you read the article

quote:

spokesman for the GED Testing Service, said the change in the passing score was made after 18 months of analysis found people who earned a GED were performing better than those who received a high school diploma — with fewer of the GED students requiring remedial courses in college.

The service also added two additional scoring levels: A score of 165 to 174 will indicate the test-taker is college-ready, and GED officials hope that will mean colleges will allow them to skip having to take placement exams. A score of 175 and above, officials say, should qualify students for up to 10 college credits, though that will be up to individual higher education institutions to decide.

I mean, it's the GED, so how much lower can you make the requirements?

BUT.....let's not get a bunch of college kids getting all cocky up in here. How many tests did you take where a 90 was needed for an A, but the teacher curved to where an 85 got you an A? Not much different other than the long retroactive period.

I have a GED and it was laughably easy when I took it in 1998. Sounds like they went overboard on the new test:
quote:

The number of people who passed the GED—the high school equivalency test long seen as a “good enough diploma”—plummeted this year. About 86,500 people passed the new test in 2014, compared with 540,535 in 2013.

Common Core is going to fix all this. You no longer have to get the answer right, just get close.
