I own a Pit Boss. I have liked it. I like being able to set the temperature and the easy on and easy off.
I smoked a turkey today on my smoker and finished it with some extra heat on my pellet grill.
I cook everything on it. But it seems to take just a tad longer than my charcoal grill. For example, I used to grill burgers in 10 minutes on my charcoal grill. On my pellet grill, I’ll leave them on 16 minutes. Flipping half way. Done just right and not dried out.
Yes, every so often or just before a big grill job, I will take my shop vac and vacuum the internals of ash buildup. And I will scrape the buildup on the heat shield (to prevent flare ups)

Coming from a gas, it takes about 10 more minutes to get up to temp. It’s roughly the same cost as propane to buy pellets so you’re not saving much if any money. Pretty close to break even.
I didn't give up my gas grill when I purchased a pellet "smoker".
It just complimented my cooking apparatus collection.
They all have a purpose.

What kind of dipshits do you hang out with? I’ve used mine regularly for a few years now and haven’t had any issues at all, nor has anyone I’ve ever know who’s had one. They are super easy to use and almost idiot proof.

The new Camp Chef Woodwind PRO with the additional built in smoke box is getting great reviews.
It’s fantastic! Camp Chef is the best pellet smoker you can get in my opinion. I have experience with a few different brands since I smoke a lot.

I've had a fire on a pit boss pellet grill but it was when my wife tried to use it when I wasn't there even though I told her not to because I knew it needed to be cleaned. However, I know some of the newer models are much easier to clean. Also, after the fire I got a gravity fed charcoal and I like that one much better. It's a little more work to get started up but it's not bad at all. Still easier than traditional charcoal but not quite as easy as a propane or pellet grill where you just press a button. But the flavor is better and it gets hotter, faster.

I enjoy mine but I use my Weber gas grill way more. I have Traeger (780? the first series with Wi-Fi).

RecTec RT-700
Love this thing. For steaks, I like to smoke to temp and reverse sear on the gas grill since I can have it hot and ready. Never had any issues w the RecTec. I clean the drip pan quarterly and usually smoke 1-2 times per week.
I have the sear plates but I’m yet to use them. The pellet grill can get to 500F so not a problem if you want to use it as a traditional grill. You just crank thru your pellets really fast.

This is the opposite from what I've seen.
A very dear friend of mine is an absent minded retard who lives in a big arse house in Monument, Co.
He's got a nice Traeger right outside his kitchen door on a wooden deck(2nd story).
If anyone could frick up and burn the house down it would be this guy. He forgets fricking everything. We have been at the bar down the road for hours before he realized he left it on. Apparently you can turn them on and off with an App. That was cool. And neat safety feature.
We've smoked stuff in it over night more than once, sleeping 5-6 hours while it ran just fine.
If this dude has used it over 100 times in 2 years without incident, I'd vouch that they are pretty fricking safe.
Look at this pic. It's also worth mentioning, He don't even pull it away from the house when using it.

I bought a pellet smoker but because I am trashy it was a waste of money. I didn’t clean it and it fricked up.

I purchased a Memphis pro pellet grill a few years back and rarely use it, however, our egg gets used weekly. I’ve had multiple grease fires on the memphis but I will say it has been my fault for not cleaning the grill and ash trays before the next cook. I now only use it for long smokes at low temps so there is virtually no chance of a high temp grease fire. I just got scared because it is a built in and under my patio so when those fires happened it was concerning to say the least. I’m used to the no maintenance of the egg so maybe that’s why I took for granted the required cleaning of the memphis. It does produce good results though.

Some consider a Pellet Smoker to be a “Sissy Smoker”. I don`t know much about them but just wondering if the flavor is comparable to coal and or wood fired. It seems like a good design that would work ok.

I got a $400 pit boss 3 years ago for Christmas. Zero issues. Smoked a 20 lb turkey on it today. Have done everything on it that I'd do on a charcoal or gas grill: burgers, steak, fish, etc. The temp control has been fun to play with and experiment. For example, this summer I slow smoked a cheap oven roast to 210 and pulled it. Turns out, pulled beef kicks pulled pulled pork's arse (in my opinion).

I have a Big Green Egg and a small Pit Boss that I got for our camper.
It really depends on what you want to do to answer if they are worth it or not. If you are really into smoking meats, I would steer you away from a pellet grill. You don't get the same flavor that you would from an offset or a kamodo style grill.
That said, the pellet grill is so much easier to deal with and consistent. It's great for steaks, burgers, wings, or whatever. I now use the small pit boss more than I do my egg because of the simplicity. It's literally and easy bake oven.
However, if I'm looking for great flavor, I'm going to the egg. You won't be unhappy at all with a pellet grill. But you will find yourself having some ribs or brisket that someone else smoked and ask yourself why you can't get yours that quite to that level.
And I won't touch a gas grill with a 10 foot pole. They ruin the flavor of meat.

If you are looking for a good pellet grill with excellent customer service, get a Recteq. I've had only one issue in one year's use. The heating rod quit igniting the pellets. I sent an email and had a new one in the mailbox within 5 days.

If you are not a serious hard core smoker, my money is on the Masterbuilt cabinet smoker. Usually can catch one on sell at Bass Pro a couple times a year for under $200. Easy to use digital settings and nice consistent heat. Cons are it only gets as hot as 275, have to reload wood chips every 30-45 minutes. Can get really good smoked flavoring but probably doesn’t produce quite as good of bark on your brisket and ribs as a stick smoker but it is decent. Use mine about once a month for ribs, brisket, pork shoulders, leg quarters and of course my Thanksgiving day turkey.
My current outdoor setup is the above mentioned smoker, a two burner gas grill used primarily for skirt, strips, ribeyes, salmon. A 36 in black stone for burgers, breakfast, hibachi, Philly cheesesteaks, etc. and of course I’ve got my burner and pots I can bust out for crawfish boils or fish fry’s.
Thinking about getting one of those knock off Noni pizza ovens.
