My 6 year old had his check up today. He starts in-person school next week. He is/was going back to school regardless but I was curious to hear from the pediatrician.

Before thoughts on returning to school I asked him how his business was doing. This is in Georgia, one of the states who handled this best IMO. The doctor had to furlough 75% of his staff for weeks.

About school - he essentially has two offices now... a sick side and a regular check up side. Business is is not and has not been booming on the sick side. He firmly asserted that kids should have been in schools day one. What they’ve seen at the practice with 6 doctors, is that kids don’t get Covid from other kids. They might get it from their parents or older siblings but not from other kids. And those who get it have extremely mild or no symptoms. And they don’t pass it to other kids.

It’s anecdotal but thought I’d share since many here have kids returning to school soon.

Most people are knew that. Schools have been back in session for almost a month here and there have been no serious outbreaks.

Our school district in metro Atlanta was one of the first to go back on a hybrid schedule mid August. Very few COVID cases, and they are beginning the transition to full time school this week. Our county board has handled it wonderfully in my opinion. Very reasonable and transparent with their decision making.

The survival rate for folks under 20 years old is 99.997%
That means .003% of those under 20 who catch the Covid results in a death. And those kids had other health issues.
Yet school age children have been isolated at home because it's an election year.
We can't continue to politicize this nor let tinpot dictator governors and mayors ruin lives with their decrees of "I am the government"

Our pediatrician has always had a sick and well visit side.

Schools started back here about a month ago. You can either do full time in person or virtual learning. If you picked virtual you have to stick with that all semester.

My kids Pediatrician works out at the same gym as me and I saw him on Saturday and asked about his office and COVID

It was like setting off a firework. Lol

He went off about how soft everyone was and said his office is 100% back and that people are overreacting about this. Said almost every year he has more patients dealing with a more serious virus or strain of the flu

Said there is no reason to keep kids all cooped up at home and they need to be on a normal schedule for mental health. Amen to that

Pediatrician waiting rooms have always been like this. Sounds like they expanded it to the treatment rooms too though which probably isn't a bad idea generally speaking (not covid exclusive).

Kids are more likely to get struck by lighting while being home schooled than dying from contracting Covid at school.

It’s all about the funding, not about the kids for our districts.

USA Today had an article yesterday with a positive sounding headline concerning Florida's school opening...then they proceeded to doom-cast for most of the text.

Now you've got the NY Times with a "bombshell" saying the White House tried to pressure the CDC to "downplay" the risks to children over the summer. It's not downplaying...it's actually stating the facts of the risks to children.

(Quoted two different posters.)

We're almost done with the 1st 9 weeks (started 8/10). couple of kids here and there that had to quarantine because of exposure, and we just had our first class have to quarantine last week, due to guidance from our all knowing LDH I've never been worried about school- start on time, then you have time to take if necessary. All these schools that waited 4-5 weeks to start are going to be going to school into late June/early July if there are any delays

Kids should be in school, but this is complete hogwash. Kids give each other every sickness under the sun, but I’m supposed to believe some anecdotal shite about kids not passing Covid-19 to one another?

Kids apparently dont harbor the virus in high enough load to be effective vectors
