As many of you have mentioned, the cause is one or more of the following:
faulty design
faulty materials (concrete, etc.)
faulty construction equipment (cranes, cables, etc.)
incorrect construction/installation methods
correct procedures but were not followed
Bad materials or bad construction equipment seem to be the most likely cause for a project of this magnitude to fail, but anything or everything is possible.

Hard to tell from that one photo. With that much boom and the jib extension it is probably less than 5 tons.
That is more than likely a single part line with small wire rope. Probably 5/8 or 3/4. Highly unlikely it is high performance rope on a picker that small. Probably a 6x19 class

Lol at the down votes. That is still not a suspension bridge.
This was my initial thought process. The bridge, as it sat there was basically one big I-beam, over a rather large span. I'm assuming Lateral Torsional buckling occurred when it went unsupported.

Youre right. The pier was supposed to be on the grass next to the waterway. Still looks like someone missed some temporary supports too.

That's a shite ton of weight dropping on something that is not supposed to have any weight on it, especially something that is not supposed to have an impact like that.
The one photo it almost looks to me like that large piece of concrete was dropped onto the top of the bridge because it looks like there is an impact crater on the left hand side of it. But that's just a guess.

No lateral deflection and the span didnt torsion at all from what I am seeing. I would guess it failed in bending, but I dont know why, probably something to do with the precast tensioning or concrete

Only one span of the bridge had been erected. The "support" that is shown on the right of most of the photos is the lower part of the support you see in the rendering.

I was designed as a cable stay bridge. Look at the artist rendering. While I agree it was acting like a truss in the center, it clearly was not designed to be completely unsupported for that span...hence the need for the cables. I don't think LTB would be an issue with a base that wide.
I'm with the others who think some temporary supports should have been in place until the cables were attached.

Not so easy to explain the rating but that thing wouldn't have had anything close to that wight at that height. It is possible that something from a lift above fell on it but it is unlikely.

Yes. It appears the bridge construction wasn’t complete. The pier and cables look like they haven’t been installed yet. Without them, the bridge’s loads would have been transferred to a different point.
This very well could be an error in construction sequencing in which the loads of one of the phases in construction hadn’t properly been evaluated.
But I’m not a Civil engineer.
