This is why so many people get nervous when there is a system in the Gulf. There is basically no way to predict this kind of strengthening, it is beyond our current understanding of atmospheric physics. It's a lot easier to predict when a storm won't strengthen vs. how much it will strengthen

Almost happened with Opal. That one veered toward New Orleans AND sped up one night. If it hadn't gone back to normal by morning New Orleans would have been in the bullseye and there wouldn't be enough time to get out.

If that happened in the Gulf and hit NOLA, it would be the dead bodies in the trees scenario.

It depends on how big the storm is. If a storm is this strong Katrina or Rita sized then it's unimaginable. Far worse than Katrina. If this storm this size hit then it's not as bad as Katrina was. The one spot the eye hits would be obliterated, though.

It's a lot like the Katrina/Camille comparison. Camille made landfall as a much stronger storm in roughly the same location. But it was a very small storm and New Orleans was relatively unaffected.

Is this the strongest storm most of us will ever see?

The storm surge is probably the biggest killer dynamic of a hurricane. Katrina s storm surge was on scale of a Cat 5. Remember, Katrina was at a 5 level before weakening upon landfall. The storm surge remained catastrophic.

Patricia stacked Mexico fricked

Seriously it is certainly thought provoking to see how fast a storm can intensify. Not much preparedness time for Mexico. Hang tough Mexico

I lived from the time of Nash/Betsey as a kid, to now. This mofo is going to be a killer. I had saw first hand what these things can do. Pray for the people at land fall.

Well, that, and Bush didn't blow up the levies because he hated black people during Camille.
