Someone seeing some deflection less than 12 hours before the collapse is not the same thing as construction workers saying that 30' open spans are unsafe and seeing 3" deep birdbaths in the floor slabs for days or weeks prior to the collapse.

I certainly agree those aren’t the same and in no way intended for you to think that was the implication.

It would be shocking if everyone took a “whatever I’m sure someone else knows what’s up approach.” Especially for that long with that many professionals around.

I was simply pointing out that stress/bowing may have been noticed the day prior by someone unrelated so it could be interwoven to supporting the support narrative instead of the crane narrative

Is this crane leaning towards the Quarter?

Who knows? The block hanging from the jib on a cable should be acting as a plumb bob, though, and give a decent visual reference of vertical.

Good eye.

New assessments show that both cranes at the Hard Rock Hotel construction night are unstable, forcing officials to expand the evacuation area beyond Canal Street. "Both cranes are heavily damaged," Fire Chief Tim McConnell said. "Both are in danger of collapsing ... Our goal is still to stabilize them and continue our search in a safe manner."

Just passing by, the crane on the left in that pic has a very noticable lean.

Found another pic of building in New Orleans. 30' by 30' span, concrete poured & not one fill beam. A yard of concrete weighs over 4000 pounds. Decking manufacturer says no more than 7 to 10 feet without support. In my 36yrs of Ironwork, I never saw a span of more than 10' without support. This was a sh$t job from the start!! What a shame!

I design buildings for a living... I've never designed one like in that picture. IMO, You can't have outriggers like that without interior beams lined up with them as it will twist the girder, particularly if that is not a composite slab with shear studs. Nor have I ever seen a steel deck span that far without interior beams. That said, I can't see the whole design so I could be missing something.

I don't believe. Roosevelt is on the river side of Burgundy, evac is on the lake side.

But it's close.

I believe their main entrance is across the street from the Orpheum. I'm sure it's a nightmare for a lot of businesses down there for the unforeseeable future.

On a project this size the developer/owner is usually driving the cost cutting. It depends on how much risk the GC is willing to take to meet those demands... in this case its not looking like a good decision.

Isn’t the GC a partner in the development?

The $85 million project is being constructed by Citadel Builders of Metairie. Along with Hard Rock, the project's partners include Mohan Kailas; Denzel Clark, president of Citadel; and Todd Trosclair, CEO of Metairie-based All-Star Electric. Harry Baker Smith is the architect.

Yep, which is why we hate doing anything design-build. You are constantly being pushed to make it cheaper or remove something from the project. Glad it wasn't us.

I’ve heard from others in the no traffic zone that police escorts are the middle ground solution.

I’d guess they are using the back entrance primarily too

Public safety officials had to abandon their original plan of removing the cranes, which are both damaged and likely to fall.

"They're actually shocked they are still standing," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell at a 5 p.m. press conference.

Cantrell said an issue adding to the distress is incoming rainy weather that could cause problems in continuing search and rescue missions and keeping the structure from further collapse.

Too much water could add weight to the structure, Cantrell said, which is still incredibly dangerous and unstable.

Did she just lose her cool during the live press conf a few minutes ago? Seemed like she got a little testy with a reporter. Couldn’t hear it from the kitchen.

I don’t think the structure is the only thing dangerous and unstable in that paragraph.

Mayor might not want to stay at the new WWII museum hotel. The floors are sagging there as well. One year delay already. No way I’ll stay there.
