You get stepdads phone number.
Call him and say these words:
"Hey man I've been meaning to say thanks again for letting me park the car over there. I would have said hey had I known you were home the other day."
Then move on with your life.
Oh and grow up.

The part I really don't get is why the frick your buddy gave him money. If it's actually just about him feeling you weren't appreciative he wouldn't have demanded or accepted money after the fact. And I wouldn't pay him shite after the fact anyway because there was obviously no discussion of payment ahead of time. Sounds like your buddy's stepdad is a trashball. End of story.

Send a gift card to a restaurant and a thank you note.
Would be a nice gesture.

This, or a phone call saying the same thing. You had better do one or the other because Douche Dad has copies of all your keys.
Next time you go down, bring him a bottle of his favorite liquor and a box of Massengil.

Short term 3rd floor is the solution to this problem.

Nice subtle brag on the 2 week trip overseas.

Apparently "Thanks" is code for paying me what you would have paid long term rental for my generosity. That's how I interpret it.

I don't understand why you're spending time worrying over this.

Sounds like he reads Tiger Droppings. You have made a mistake.

who cares. You can't please everyone. Move on with life. Some people can't be helped.

Just call and explain that you are concerned that he was unhappy with how you handled it and wanted to make sure he knew how much you appreciated the help. Let him know that you didn't think to knock because of the reasons you stated.
No big deal. He sounds like a bitch (if true), but doing this will make him happy at no cost to you and probably make him realize he was being a bitch. Most likely, he will say something like "Oh, no, I wasn't upset about anything. Thanks for the call."
Or, he will wonder where you got the idea that he was upset, and you will have outed your other buddy of trying to scam some money off of you.
Or, you know, just forget about it and move on with your life.

If I knew it was going to be such a hassle, I'd have just parked at the airport.

How about this, if you see him again in person, casually thank him again for letting you leave your car there. Don't bring up money, him being upset or anything. Just say "Thanks again," and leave it at that.

frick his stepdad. Your friend told you it was okay for you to park there, you thinked the stepdad before you left. When you go back into town, your friend told you the keys were in the bushes, you got them, got your car and headed home. Where they testing you or something? "let's put the keys in the bushes and see if he thanks the stepfather then get the keys or just gets the keys, without saying anything to the stepfather and just leaves". People who expect to be addressed bother me..
After my dad passed away my mom started "dating" this guy (they are now married). I was in college at the time, but he started coming over several times a week. At one point my mom approaches me and tells me "____________ doesn't feel welcomed when he comes over because you don't acknowledge him when he comes in". I was usually studying or doing something else when he came over and since he started to be a regular basis thing, I didn't feel like I needed to give him a formal greeting every time he came over. I told her if he didn't feel comfortable then he doesn't have to come over. That was the beginning of a lot of fights (not physical fights), but your situations reminds me of this situation. Its not your fault the stepdad feels like you needed to address him.

ha so your friend wants you to pay this guy for a favor he was originally gonna do for free? right

If this guy really matters to you, invite him to your tailgate again. When you see him, tell him, hey, I want to let you know again how thankful I am that you let me use your parking space. You saved me a lot of money. Then give him a beer, pat him on the back, and you're good. Apparently all this guy is looking for is some sort of acknowledgement. No better place to do it than at your tailgate.
If this guy really doesn't matter to you, then congrats. You got free parking at his place. Advantage: you. frick that guy.
It's all in your approach.
