Under 30 and not a parent yet, but we aren't planning to.

Outside an imminent threat of harm that would be worse than a whipping (about to touch a pot of boiling water, etc.) I don't really see a good reason for spanking. Even our dog was trained through positive reinforcement rather than negative, and humans are smarter than dogs. And like someone else said, a situation like running out in the street or touching something dangerous probably means you weren't paying attention and that doesn't fall on the kid.

I’m 33 next month. Daughter turns 3 in August. When she was just starting to walk she would get into things we didn’t want her to and I would slap her legs or her hands. I don’t think I ever really spanked her. I’ve done more than my fair share of yelling at her and being stern. I think that has gone a long way in not needing to physically punish her. People say it’s just a case by case thing with each child so we’ll see.

Drinking at the table while the kid played on an iPad.

I think it depends on the kid. My brother doesn't spank his daughter because she listens when he yells. My cousin spanks his sons often because they absolutely refuse to listen no matter what he says.

Well I can already tell that you'll be better than most parents. If kids don't fear consequence, good luck "talking through it"

I have three little ones, just mentioning a whipping works almost every time.

Those are the type of children that everyone wants. Unfortunately, as this thread has already demonstrated, sometimes you get a hard headed little shite no matter what kind of parent you are.

I'm 40 with a 5 year old, couldn't imagine spanking him.
I got whooped plenty as a kid and don't think it taught me anything other than don't get caught.

Eta.
If I had a kid in my 20s I probably would have spanked him just out of frustration, having a kid at 35 I was a lot calmer and able to find better solutions. I see a lot of parents spank their kids just because they won't do what they say. Seems reactionary to me.

Id have to hit her so hard itd almost be abuse to make any impact.

Turns out, the threat of timeout does way more to change the behavior. So I just do that

32 with a 4 & 3 year old. They do get spankings. The younger one you can take things away and she basically tells you "I don't care", give her a little tap and she straightens up. The 4 year responds better to losing a toy or TV time. I try no to spank him because it doesn't affect him at all. He continues doing whatever even after a spanking.

There you go, the modern viewpoint in a nutshell.

Depends on what you mean by modern. Debates about corporal punishment go back a pretty long time. There was a proposal to restrict corporal punishment of children and woman in the Pennsylvania colony in the 1600s.

Sometimes yes, and I will admit it’s purely out of frustration. The truth is, it doesn’t so much for discipline. Taking things away is far more productive for actually curbing bad behavior

Ever notice certain demographic moms in Walmart beat the hell out of their kids? Doesn’t seem to work….

I have no real issue with kids getting spanked, I see a whole lot of spanking of kids in stores by certain population and those kids are hell on wheels. Or they just asked for a sucker.

I have 3, I spanked my 25 year old the most and she deserved it the least, my 14 year old has had a handful of them and he deserves one daily. My 11 year old has had like 1 in his life and I dob=ubt he deserved it, you look at him mean and he melts.

I dont find it to be effective really, I was never scared of a spanking although I got a few. I really hated my parents being disappointed. There are plenty other ways to get kids attention and change their behavior.

No worse than I do my dog or gf. You have to lay down the law.

I find that once you give them a throat punch and they're on the ground a good kick works just as well.

I can answer this. No they do not.

Some do, some don’t.

The larger question is how do you discipline your kids overall? Spanking can be effective but not if you’re using it by itself.

Actally I don’t think I’ve ever laid a hand on her.
She’s 14
He’s 12
