My son (10) has spent the past 2 summers and is spending this summer with my parents. They live out in the country with no internet so he spends the summers much like I did as a child. Learning to garden/farm, hanging out with all the old men at the local gas station (drinking coffee), swimming, fishing, target shooting everyday, etc... Every school break he begs to go hangout at their house. Think of all the memories he is making and all of the experiences that 99% of kids these days are not exposed to any longer. He truly is lucky to have this opportunity!!

Mine are there now, probably the 5th or 6th summer. It's fantastic, and the 2 months is perfect. The 1st month is a dream, doing what I want, not having to wake up early for school, etc.

Then once the 2nd month hits, you really start wanting them back. It's just a perfect amount of time imo

For my boys, almost 12 and twins, this will be the last summer as they're a bit older and it's now a bit boring for them and the it cousins are also 18 and leaving for college, so they don't have much to do.

this is true. My pops was one of those. Military, workaholic. I understand he did what he had to do to make sure his family had food and shelter. I do wish that he could have made it to more events and celebrations, or just be there more. We’ve talked about it. He wishes the same, we have a good relationship now that I’m older.

I was a pipeliner when I found out I was going to be a dad. I left that world to find stability at home so that I could make those events and be present.

I think it's telling that OP didn't give us the excuse for why an 8YO has a goddamned phone.

It's not relevant to the story.

It's pretty telling that you can't seem to grasp that.

about a 12 hour drive. The invitation to visit is open.

I suggest taking some time off when you can and going for a visit or two.

We've been sending my kiddo back to Louisiana every summer to spend time with his grandparents, just two weeks usually, but I welcome a few weeks to not have that responsibility, plus he loves it.

We plan on doing it every summer, it's usually the most time he gets to spend with his grandpa who doesn't come visit as often.

We talk to him most nights to see how he's doing, but half the time he just wants to get back to playing.

OP included it. There's a decent chance his kid rarely knows he's in the same building if he's glued to his phone unless kid is hungry.

Ergo, no reason to feel upset, because he stopped being an involved parent long before this summer trip.

You whined he didn't include it and your retort is that he did include it? Well then, he included it, why are you whining?

There's a decent chance you just jump to conclusions to be an internet badass trying score internet points for some odd reason.

Nailed it

My kids are gone for the summer. Took a half day, heading out with the wife now. Got the NBA Finals later. Trying to figure out when I'll be able to squeeze some time racing on the wheel today. Like you said, it's tough!
