It wasn’t the violence or the amount of time she was worried about. It was the result. He wasn’t winning.

So she hired him a coach. For about $50, Ms. Hicks purchased four hours of online lessons from a player she found through a freelance labor website.

“There’s pressure not to just play it but to be really good at it,” said Ms. Hicks, a project manager from Winchester, England. “You can imagine what that was like for him at school.”

Rob hopes his friends don’t find out how he upped his game. “They’ll probably think I’m cheating or something,” he said. “That’s how 10-year-old kids work.”

Nick Mennen was happy to pay $20 an hour for his 12-year-old son, Noble, to take “Fortnite” lessons. The dad is already dreaming of a scholarship—or at least some tournament money. (“Fortnite” creator Epic Games Inc. recently pledged $100 million in tournament prizes. Some colleges court gamers with financial incentives to join their varsity teams.)

Noble used to win “Fortnite” infrequently before he began taking about six hours of lessons a month. “Now he’ll throw down 10 to 20 wins,” said Mr. Mennen, a software developer in Cedar Park, Texas.

I'm officially old. I used to be a game nerd and I have no idea what Fortnite is.

I think I remember convincing my parents to buy a couple of chose "cheat" magazines when I was a kid, for different games.

Yeah and game genie for OG Nintendo, game shark later on.

It’s different than hiring a coach for a video game.

This has been around for a long time..I know of a guy who charges $8000 for an all expenses paid trip to South Korea to train and get better at a video game.

And if you don't think people take the trip, you vastly underestimate the amount of people with IDGAF money.

I'm scared to start gaming again. Skyrim and Fallout ruined my life for a while.

I read the whole article.

WSJ should be purchased by almost all adults.

And then you have the MMOs where people just grind out gold/items/levels for money or just flat out sell their characters

I think it’s dumb, but, IMO it’s no different than hiring a hitting coach. In all honesty, in the world we live in today, it’s highly more likely a kid makes money playing video games than one ever making it in professional sports.

i do because my kids play. it's fun, but it'll pass.

i will say this, i have NEVER had any issues with my kids and their video games. they saved up, bought their own xbox. have paid for every single game, and i never once had to tell them to get off....

till this damn game. they listen when we tell them to cut it out and play probably a total of an hour and a half to two hours a week during the summer, but their friends are fiends and actually texted me asking why they couldn't get on.

Suppressed M416 or SCAR with 2-6x glass. If not, at least a red dot. Love watching them run around trying to figure out where the shots are coming from...

Agreed.

I ride with PUBG.

Fortnite is too cartoonish.

I prefer the real weapons and real physics of PUBG.
