I don't believe they are embarrassed unless parents have taught them it is "crude".
Manners? I remember when a elementary school teacher gave us a lecture aimed at several individuals about "passing gas" in class. That was back in the 1950s.

I'm 77. On a flight a couple of months ago I had everyone in First Class holding their nose. The only one who laughed was my 49 year old son. My wife was pissed.

My dad is in his 80’s and his son isn’t embarrassed by it yet.

Depends on where they're at. If we're in the car together, it's a free for all. Really, it's only when they're around girls that they suck it up.

Alexa, play fart noises.

My son found this command during the first few days of us getting an Alexa. The wife (no pics) rolls her eyes and acts embarrassed, but there is always one or two fart sounds that get her to laugh.

Crazy to think that we’ve been laughing at the same thing as the Egyptians, the Persians, the Romans, the Vikings.

But why?

I think part of it is the relief. You always feel better after a fart (unless it's a shart), so that's worth at least a smile and maybe a giggle or a laugh. And smiling and laughter are "contagious" (probably for evolutionary social bonding reasons) so it spreads around present company.

I think there's also the competitive component for both sound and smell. If I rip one louder than yours, or if I get a reaction from the smell, then it was a quality strike and a victory of sorts. Celebration is in order. And then the other fart variations play on that competition. A squeaker or a little dainty poot is a win for the other guy and deserving of ridicule.

There is also the comedic timing, with the sound as the setup and the smell as the punchline.

Not sure if you've thought of it, but you can make her fart remotely. When I know the wife and kids are home, I like to send a fart announcement and wait for the eyeroll emoji response from my wife.

I have one. 13 year old boy. Still waiting.

He acts mortified and dramatic when I crack thunder. When he does it it’s like it’s some great payback that he revels in.

Around me both of mine (14 yo Girl and 24 yo Son) think its funny. I suspect they cut it out around others shortly after they started to school. Peer pressure does far more good that it does bad...

That said my daughter has 2-8 friends at our house all of the time and those 13-15 year old girls are nastier than all of the boys that my son ever had around the place. They are constantly talking about taking a dump...it is pretty disturbing to say the least. I thought 13 year old boys had a twisted sense of humor until I spent some time listening to this bunch around the place...

When daughter came home from kindergarten and told me that the reason to say excuse me when you pass gas is so that everyone will know who did it
