Been doing that for close to 10 years now. Every now and then some bum claims to accept plastic. I usually take the opportunity to share a laugh with them and wish them luck getting others to pay for their chosen lifestyle.
Just last week, one fella claimed he accepted bitcoin. I was impressed he kept up with current events, but it could have also been a sign of someone well off just doing some research.

This is a symptom that some people just want to control things they don’t like.
Panhandling is a self regulating endeavor. Givers/enablers will eventually feel how unproductive it is. Takers will experience the volatility of relying on the generosity/gullibility of others and will ultimately find it unsustainable in the long run.
Darwin’s law has a way of balancing these things out.

Is there that much money in panhandling or are we that bad as a society that we cannot do enough to prevent this, or are individuals who are panhandling just lack social skills to keep themselves off the street?

It's gotten 10x worse in Dallas/Austin/Houston in the last few years. Dudes are making a killing standing outside 7-11's.
So bad that Dallas has an ad campaign to encourage people to give to charity instead of panhandlers.

You don't take into account how many people fall for it and give. And how many panhandlers are willing to double down to not have to actually work. The sheer number of them seems to indicate that it is a lucrative enough endeavor to continue to pursue or else they wouldn't. If people wouldn't give, problem solved....but just like the robo callers in India, people do fall for this shite or else they would move on to the next scam.

They are at every decently busy intersection in Baton Rouge now. And every single interstate off ramp.

Bad in Laffy too. Last Friday I watched the cops run off a "family" with 2 kids actually running around in traffic so they could walk up to windows at the busiest intersection in Laffy.

Nurse at BR general told me at Mid City she admitted a panhandler who was desperate to be discharged, "because I make $1500 a day at that spot and someone else will get it if I'm in the hospital for 3 days!"

What? Of course that’s been taken into account. Panhandling is not something new. It’s been around forever. There have been and will always be people willing to give and others willing to take. Relax. Things will be just fine.

I have a friend that's a panhandler and he says most of the handouts he gets are from ford truck drivers. He says they must be a bunch of soft little wusses or something

I’ve heard a rumor from a bunch of different people in Houston, including people in law enforcement, that most of them here belong to a ring run by a guy who is basically their panhandling pimp. He moves higher performing ones to better real estate, etc and they kick most of the money up to him. I have no idea how true this is but it’s pretty fricked up when you think about it.
They passed an ordinance here strictly against panhandling that the ACLU has fought and have run a whole campaign on why you shouldn’t give them money with billboards everywhere

Living in Western Colorado back in 2006-10 i became aquainted with the practice of western california drifting type panhandling.
These men mostly had zero shame. It was like a circus. The prog city I was in didnt even attempt to stop it. Some would have signs saying, "Spare some change for Santa this Christmas so he can buy some beer" as he was dressed up in a Santa Claus outfit. Some of the funniest signs of sincerity I had ever seen, "I need some change to believe in. Preferably tangible and legal tender". shite you not.
I was getting gas one day and where the local hobos hung out and homeless at the city park(no one went there because of them) approached me and asked for exactly .75 cents. He was straight up truthful and said he and his "friends" mneeded exactly that much change for some beer.
Havent seen it close to that level yet here back home. Hell, I never even saw panhandlers here in Monroe and West Monroe up until the last few years. Think some of that West Coast blood has drifted our way.
