I went to high school with a guy and his parents were on that flight... I just remember feeling real bad for him. He was kind of a smart arse but after that he was pretty withdrawn from most everyone.
Later I dated a girl and her father worked for the fire department and was there during the clean up. He said that he found body parts...

We were in Shreveport-Bossier City at the time and remember - vividly - when Mom called me about the crash. They lived in River Ridge at the time; we grew up in nearby Westgate.
My fear of flying started at a very, very young age...an airliner clipped a hotel on approach to MSY and crashed....the airport was nearby....flying, no thank you

Also, the same year was the Air Florida flight 90 crash into the Potomac River.

I worked about a half mile from the crash site, it was pouring down rain and very windy, I was setting up a safety party for employees. I don't remember if it was still raining when we heard a loud sustained noise, like thunder rumbling along, but different. We went out and could see all the smoke billowing, within minute it seemed like every vehicle siren in JP was headed in that direction. WWL radio was reporting it shortly, asking people to stay out of the area.
It wasn't until the next morning, Saturday, that I learned that a friend and his wife were killed. They had four children, they were the last two people to board and were not sitting together. His wife was 8 months pregnant and many of the death counts are 154 to include the unborn baby. There is a lot more to the story, but I will respect the privacy of the family.

I flew out of MSY on the 20th anniversary. The Times-Pic had it on their front page. Not sure it was the best idea to have those in the terminal.

My young adult life seemed to be coincident with my need to fly somewhere right after a major crash. Flew out of NOLA a couple wks later.
This was one of two airline incidents in NOLA that changed commercial aviation. This one brought on mandatory microburst detection and heeding the warning.
The other was the Taca flight that lost power landing in a thunderstorm and landed on a levee out by Michoud. The planes jet engines were capable of drinking a firehose and still running. They were not able to handle the hail as both engines plugged with ice and could not be restarted. Boeing redesigned them as a result of this incident. Fortunately the pilot made a remarkable landing and everyone walked off the plane safely

Man, I remember that day well. I had friends in the crash zone but have never seen pics like these. Thanks for posting these.
