I actually lived a half a mile from there. I was on the other side of the canal riding my bike on west Metairie on the other side of the canal about two hours after it happened. I had no idea what was going on until I got home and saw the news

Remember it vividly as I was 14 when it happened. I lived behind Delta playground approx. 1 mile from the crash site. Weather was nasty that day. I rode my Mongoose bike to Roosevelt/W. Metairie as police and first responders had already arrived on scene and were telling sight-see'ers to go back home. Flames had already been extinguished as I recall the smell of jet fuel and the smoldering wreckage.
A girl from my high school was 17 and both her parents died in that fatal crash. Pretty sure she and her 3 siblings were each awarded around $500,000 by PanAM. Seems awfully low as I guess that was the dollar amount 30+ yrs ago for wrongful death, jury verdict awards.
IIRC, of the 140 passengers on board headed to Las Vegas, only 20 were from the NOLA area and quite a few were from other countries. I've been down 17th, Taylor, and Hudson Streets several times telling my kids about the horrible story. A few of the lots are still vacant and homes were never rebuilt on. One of those horrific tragedies that you never forget where you were that day .... prayers sent up

Horrendous. I recall body parts in trees. Devastating.

I just found out last week that the guy who has been cleaning our office for the last 5 years lost 4 relatives in the crash. His mother, father, aunt and uncle. He typically doesn't say very much but just brought this up randomly last week. I googled it after talking to him and I saw that the anniversary was coming up. I figured that it was weighing heavily on him and that he just wanted to talk to someone about it. Sad stuff

I went to ShowBiz pizza that day for my cousin birthday. That's all I remember about that.

Remember like it was yesterday, just graduated from Rummel , and like someone said, the weather that day was horrible. It was one of those typical summer afternoon thunderstorms x's 10.
Girl I worked with husband's parents were on the flight... he was probably about 8 when it happened... He and his sister were both given trusts by Pan Am... They both received certain dollar amounts when they hit different ages... I think when he hit 25, was the last and largest amount he received..

Was working in the garage with my grandfather when we heard what we thought was loud thunder. They lived in Metairie, near Kenner. A few minutes later granny came out to tell us a plane crashed. She always had the radio on. Was 12yrs old at the time and was the last summer grandpa was with us. Tragic.

A friends parents were on that plane. I just remember the shock of the sudden loss of parents for someone that young (16). Also an ex-GF's Dad was a first responder. He told some nasty stories.

Was 12 and was playing basketball in Harahan when the rain started coming. Could not believe how hard it was raining. We ran to car to leave and heard this loud boom. I lived a block away and thats when I heard the loud boom was the plane crash.
