44 years ago, a Pan Am flight took off from MSY, encountered a severe microburst and crashed into a nearby Kenner neighborhood.
RIP to the 145 souls on board and 8 on the ground.

Was there. This crash led to air traffic control implementing wind shear detection at all airports (if i remember correctly).

Can't believe it has been that long already. My Godparents house was on the flight path between the lift off and crash site!

Remember it like yesterday... Just graduated from Rummel in May. I actually remember the day, girl I was dating at the time, and her friend were over at the house for a swim. Sunny afternoon summer day, where those afternoon thunder storms blow in... It was crazy...
Guy I went to Rummel with, lived in the neighborhood, affected him pretty bad.
Girl I worked with husband's parents were on the flight... He had a nice trust set up for him...

The parents of one of my fraternity brothers were on that flight. He went from lazy college kid to CEO of an oil company overnight.

I was coming down Airline Hwy from New Orleans and saw a huge black cloud. Finally got the news about the crash. If it stayed in the air for 5 to 10 seconds longer it probably would have ended up in my neighborhood.

Had two friends who lived a block or so down Fairway and knew an accountant who had an office right next to where the plane went down. None of them were injured but they were right there.
At the time the plane went down I was applying for a job at Godfather's Pizza on Veterans. The thunderstorm was really strong. When I came out of the restaurant after being hired, a news helicopter was hovering over the parking lot live broadcasting the smoking crash. The air smelled of smoke and fuel.
That was a crazy day that I will never forget.
Before the crash we used to hang out and drink beer on the last landing lights of the east-west runway near the levee and the St. Charles Parish line. After the crash we went back there one time and the airport police ran us off and threatened to arrest us all.

I was a student worker at the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on Quail Drive when that happened; one of our New Orleans employees was on his way back from Baton Rouge and witnessed the crash. He called it in to the office on his radio so we knew about it before it broke on the news. The one thing I remember about that day is the weather was absolutely violent and black as night.

Knew a girl that lived where it crashed - her house was fine except for debris next house damaged one more house over - gone.
Was working by Lafreniere park when it happened - the weather was unreal - smoke too.
Relative of mine was a lawyer for one of victims - the fact that some survived the crashed but not the fire unreal

A few of the passengers were from Lake Chuck. Gray Stream, Spook's brother, was one of them. Pete Calderera's wife was another

Was working at Michoud with an older guy who lived in one of the neighborhoods hit by this crash. He was probably in his 70s. I've never seen a guy that age move that fast. He just grabbed his shite and hauled arse. Probably made it from the East to Kenner in record time.
Luckily his house and family were fine but, it took a LONG time for things to resemble anything approaching normal.

I went to high school with a guy and his parents were on that flight.. I think we are talking about the same family.. That following September at school we all somewhat looked out for him but he was kind of moody guy to begin with...
