Might be the best but good luck finding an instructor for that.

Shaolin Kung Fu is the best. It teaches martial arts self defense as well as weapons training.

I always liked Taekwondo for the lessons it teaches, but it just never seemed very applicable in real world self defense.
I won't disagree. But as in many things in life, it's about taking the knowledge you acquire on a subject and applying it to real life situations. For example, one of the things we've worked on early on in the process is generating power in a short distance. While in a real life self defense situation an attacker is not going to come a you in a controlled fashion like in the dojo, you can still use the "lets generate as much power in a strike in as short a distance as possible" lesson to defend yourself if you need to.
And here is something that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet. 90% of self defense happens before you encounter a bad guy. The most important thing you can do is have situational awareness when you are out in public.

I didn't take it as such. There is a reason that the Marines have implemented it.
Well the part about having to join the Marines to learn it was the joke (that's a heck of a commitment!).
But as a system, I think it's outstanding, and I would love to have training in it.

It’s a lot easier to stick with BJJ as a 35+ year old and it’s much easier on your brain and body
This is the kind of advice I need. Thank you.

But be prepared when those younger advanced jiu jitsu students go fast on you, you’ll be tapping a lot. It may deflate your ego, therefore don’t come in with an ego and be open minded.
I’ve been learning jiu jitsu for the past 7 months and finally a few things (out of a plethora) are starting to click. Training with those younger kids will help your cardio athletic ability and visual reaction speed
It’s a never ending journey

I am 49 and have been training jits almost 13 years. I have broken my nose twice and broken a few ribs boxing but those heal (maybe a surgery for a broken nose though lol). What doesn't heal easily is neck injuries and I have had two pretty serious Cervical area neck problems and both of those happened rolling with young, reckless balls out White Belts during sparring. I am a pretty big dude and it never fails that if I get another big guy to roll with that is new to the game, they want to try to out muscle you and that is exactly what BJJ is not about.

Ive thought about trying BJJ but I just cant bring myself to be tied up with a man like that even though I love watching the sport.

Krav is fantastic when paired with BJJ. Keep in mind they cannot, or are not supposed to, teach yoy the military style due to liability

Agreed
I try to use as little strength as I can.
Even when I started I did my best to refrain from spazzing out and being reckless. I also know if you do that with the wrong purple belt or higher you’re gonna get wrecked.

You don’t have to make eye contact

If you have a vivid picture memory like I do, all you have to do is watch the movie Taken 30+ times and visualize those moves. Then when the time comes to fight, you’ll be ready. As long as you keep in shape of course.

It's not so bad if you wear a gi unless they don't have a clue how to keep the top closed because:
A. they have no clue how to tie their belt correctly
B. they didn't wear a rash guard under their top
C. your opponent has more hair than a Wookie.
That's when I tap folks with whatever means necessary.

I have zero ego when it comes to learning new skills. I'm a self taught musician and don't consider myself "good" even though I've been playing for 20+ years. Always learning new stuff. Always a bigger fish out there.
Hoping to apply that same attitude to this and I want to show my son humility, and long term hard work so being a dick is not allowed.

Same reason why I have my four year girl in it

I've always understood BJJ to be great because fights go to the ground, but Muy Thai is a great striking program as well.
I think both help with different aspects of a fight, but in terms of self defense, I think true Gracie Jiu Jitsu is better. A good Jiu Jitsu school will teach the self defense aspects of bjj in addition to the competitive sport part.
In terms of self defense nothing is superior than knowing how to maximize leverage to get out of a bad position, and into a better one. While it is true that being on the ground is not good when the possibility of friends jumping in is present, you damn sure better know how to get someone off of you and back to your feet in the same scenario. BJJ teaches that.
