The kid slamming video got whacked but what are your thoughts on those two for self defense?

I've always understood BJJ to be great because fights go to the ground, but Muy Thai is a great striking program as well.

BJJ, especially if you are undersized

teaches leverage and positioning more the striking

No experience in either but I would say jiu jitsu would be more practical. Seems like you could avoid the odd “haymaker” by taking it to the ground.

Why did it get whacked? Just yesterday there was a video posted with a guy in Chicago getting shot many times at point blank range... odd consistency.

This. If you are only learning one start with Thai Boxing. If the fight goes to the ground and start breaking someone's arm you are likely to get kicked in the head by a third party.

Best just to tie someone up, neutralize them with a few quick elbows, knees, and get out of their. Head on a swivel.

If a fight goes to the ground IRL you are in a world of shite. You're going to be rolling around in piss, shite and broken glass while your adversary's friends kick you in the head. Stay on your feet at all costs.

That's a good point. Get a boot to the head while you're on the ground grappling.

1 on 1 and no friends of his around? BJJ.

Friends around? You need to stay upright, strike, and GTFO.

Going to the ground with your opponent’s friends around will lead to you getting several boots to the head.

I mean that seems obvious but I know nothing about either of these. Maybe we're missing something.

Isn't that what Krav Maga is? Basically anything goes to get yourself out of a bad situation?

Krav is for when you truly want to survive a situation. They get into some BJJ principles in higher stuff but they don’t bother with points, only survival.

MT would be my preferred starting point. It has clenches and striking.

Hapkido is good for moving around the threat and defense. Taekwondo as well, but focusing on kicks doesn't sound great to me and it appears to be more of a sport than a defense for real life. I know a Judo black belt and he can put me on my arse without trying and I outweigh him by 40-50 lbs.

Ideally a gym that has a defense-based MMA program for multiple situations would be great. MT and BJJ mixing seems ideal

disclaimer: I'm no fighter and I have no first hand knowledge of martial arts, but I have been doing research looking for the best one for kids and dads to learn together. Muay Thai is where I'll probably start
