It's not sexist but it is condescending/patronizing and thus inappropriate.

Sounds like you fellas need to give her a crash course to show her what actual sexist talk is like.

Yeah, it doesn't take much imagination to see how this would/could be an inappropriate comment.

Without knowing the tone of the conversation, it's hard to tell.

Maybe and I can see that, but is it really that big a deal? That's what I don't get about these situations. It may be inappropriate, but just don't worry about it. If it really chaps your arse that bad just say hey please don't call me that. 99% of people will say ok and apologize. It's just made a way bigger deal then it needs to be.

Back in my day you just expected 70 year olds to be sexist/racist and life moved on.

We have a 71 year old man that is a consultant on certain cases. He literally said "thank you young lady" to her on the phone for getting his time entered, and apparently wasn't the first time he said it to her. She complained to the boss it was demeaning, she's a professional and expects to be treated as such. I mean really? "Young lady"?
she sounds like a young, stupid cÛnt

I can see that side but if someone calls me "young man" I don't consider condescending. Do you?

he's trying to be nice by giving her what is in his mind a benign compliment ... why not just say "thank you" ... young lad - er, women, don't need compliments from guys in the day/day employee rela - er, transaction ...

FWIW, it's plausible that "young lady" can be said in such a way that it's demeaning.

It's like calling a guy "buddy." The tone is everything.

what the frick do you know about this, guy

I agree with the caveat that it depends on the circumstance.

In certain settings it can be seen as incredibly unprofessional.

If you're speaking at a board meeting and someone addresses you as "young man", I think that's both highly unprofessional and inappropriate.

If opposing counsel addresses you as "young lady", that's highly unprofessional.

In passing at the office? I'm not one to make a big deal of small things, but in big things it can be seen as a means to undermine both your credibility and your position.

there was a thread a few weeks (or months?) ago where people were debating how condescending it was for some one to refer to another dude as "guy"

Good one. I've seen "young man" used as a replacement for "you POS"

Jesus. One quite a few occasions, I have worked with older men who would say to younger guys "thank you young man" or just in general say something like "how was your weekend young man?" and in no way did I once think there was something wrong with it.

I use to work with one guy who called everyone "tiger" and that was annoying as frick, but funny at the same time because we would count the number of times he would say "tiger" in a day.. But he ended up getting fired for having inappropriate material on his computer. One day the manager, HR and one of the IT guys went into his office, shut the door.. About 10 mins later the manager and IT guy walked out while the HR lady stayed in. The door was closed again and about 15 mins later they both walked out, he was carrying two boxes and we never saw him again. Everyone asked the IT guy and all he would say was "he had inappropriate material on his computer". He wouldn't say if it was porn or what type of porn.. Or anything.. Anyway.. That's besides the point.

As the sexual assault/harassment accusations continue to snowball, it could be a dangerous situation. All of a sudden, you have a very gray area of what is sexual harassment. Calling someone a "young lady", IMO at least, isn't in no way sexual harassment, but you really never know what someone will take as sexual harassment.
